My GPA is a 4.99 and I have taken all honors/AP classes since freshman year and have achieved an A- or higher in all of them (currently in my junior year). On the SATs I got a 750 in math, 720 in writing, and a 710 in reading for a total of 2180. On the ACT I got a 35 in math, 33 in reading, 34 in writing, and a 34 in science for a composite score of 34. I am the captain of the girls cross country/track team and have ran varsity since freshman year. Other extracurricular activities include Special Strides and Red Cross as well as volunteering for my local first aid squad. Would it be possible for me to get into an Ivy League college, specifically Princeton? I know my SAT is low but if I only sent my ACT would I have a chance? Thanks! Also, do ivys give out scholarships/grants and if so, how much?
Yes. You have a shot. Ivies give financial aid based on need. How much depends on the need. They have larger endowments than many other institutions and are able to be more generous.
You definitely have a great shot! Id work on getting that ACT up to a 35, because a 34 is right on the average border. Your success in track is also commendable. Good luck
@divinggirl6 No. The OP is done with testing and will not be rejected due to a 34 on the ACT.
Your SAT is not “low” by any means. Based solely on academics, you are qualified to attend an Ivy University. Acceptance will be dependent upon your essays, letters of recommendation, and activities.
Ivies do not give out scholarships or grants. They give need-based financial aid, so if you’re poor you don’t have to worry about the cost of attending.
It’s certainly possible as you are academically qualified, but don’t bank on it as almost 92 out of every 100 applicants last year did not get in.
Your ACT/SAT scores are not that impressive for most of the Ivies, if not all. Just look at their averages.
Your standardized scores are fine for Princeton. However, I presume you aren’t competitive for running at Princeton, a Div1 school. You’d have to do a pretty good job developing those ECs to be competitive there, though.
There’s a nice (and relatively recent) chart here that might help: http://www.koheneducationalservices.com/what-sat-score-do-i-need-to-get-into-an-ivy-league-college/
I don’t see why everyone is saying your test scores are weak. Don’t send the SAT, just send the ACT. A 34 on the ACT is strong enough for any college.
Average ACT for Princeton is 33, and you’re well within the admitted range on the SAT as well. Applying to any Ivy is a crap shoot, but your scores are no reason not to apply.
Hi! Are you interested in running track or cross country in college? If so, could you provide some of your personal records? i.e. mile, 32, 5k. As a girl, it is much easier to amass scholarships due to running than it is for a boy (which is unfortunate for myself). Anyhow, this angle could give you an edge over many other applicants, especially if a coach of the university is interested in recruiting you. Either way, you make an exceptional student and college applicant, but due to skyrocketing rejection rates at premier colleges, no one is guaranteed acceptance. Good luck with everything though!
OP, why are you asking only about the Ivies? Each Ivy is different from the others. If it is the prestige factor you are going about this all wrong.
@16cclark : Ivies do not give athletic scholarships, although being a recruited athlete can certainly help with admission.
@TomSrOfBoston : OP indicated she was specifically interested in Princeton. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t think we should criticize a kid for aspiring to an Ivy. I don’t think you should ascribe an attitude to the OP and then criticize her for it.
@16cclark I have a 5:14 1600m (somphomore year), an 11:20 3200m, and an 18:45 5K so I definitly wouldn’t be recruited but I think I could make the walk on team (and be the slowest one lol) and thanks!
@knealon99 That’s actually pretty fast- I’m not an expert on Ivy league running times but our school has a decent xc and track program and you put our varsity girls to shame! I understand that those times are not elite but I’d imagine some schools might be interested in you. You may want to try and reach out to some of the coaches of the Ivys you’re interested in, and at least ask about some of the times they look for. The worst that can happen is that they call you slow haha
It’s worth a try if you want to go – the worst you can get is a no. But it’s best you don’t set your heart on it because even if you in the range scores wise your chances are still low as everyone else applying also has those scores or higher. You could get lucky!
Your times are recruitable. That PR would have put you near the middle of the Varsity for Brown or Dartmouth at last year’s Championship meet. Second for Yale.
Not considering course challenges, of course.
