Chance on Ivies based on test scores.

Ok, so I know there are plenty of factors that go into college admission, but I’m wondering, based on scores alone, if these stats are at least competitive/solid for the ivy league schools.

ACT: 34 C; 35 SS
SAT II: 800, Latin; 770, Math II

Yes these are competitive scores. No need to retake. Focus on the rest of your application and having a balanced list of safety, match, and reach schools.

OP, what are you thinking? That those scores, on their own, are not good? Have you looked at the colleges’ profiles of the freshman class and/or the CDS? Are you aware of the right points to worry about? Because it’s the rest of your picture that can sink you.

With those scores you will be a competitive candidate. Translation being that you will get a second more nuanced review at a school with a sub 10% acceptance rate. At a school with 40,000 applicants you will be one of the approximate 20,000 candidates who have met the required academic criteria and are worth a second look.

Now the fun starts. What makes you unique, what are you passionate about, how will you contribute to a campus and how have you demonstrated all of this juxtaposed against your knowledgeable and very specific interest in the school in question.

Do your ECs, LOR and essays all seem consistent and interrelated. Do you really know the school or did you skim the on line campus tour. Can you be detailed in how a specific school will serve your academic goals. Do you fit as an athlete, URM, legacy or the proverbial oboe player? Does your interviewer recognize your ambition, compassion and determination.

Does it all interrelate, make sense and impress? Let’s assume for round numbers that 40% (of that remaining 50%) present applications that are as solid as desecribed. That’s about 8,000 “ideal” applicants looking for 3,000 (10% acceptance rate 4,000 less let’s say 1,000 for sports and legacy).

So if you are near perfect academically, testing, LOR, Essays, ECs, and put it all together near flawlesslesly back of the envelope 8,000 qualified applicants for about 3,000 spots or a 37.5% chance.

Obviously each school is unique but this is a fair representation across the Ivies with most others than Cornell (simple size issue) being significantly harder.

Stated differently you have all the numbers to craft the story that can beat triple your chances. Good luck finding your voice to tell the story.

Great! You have one part of the picture down. Now work on the rest of your application. Make sure your grades, extracurriculars, essays, and recs are up to par.

Thanks, all!
