Is it possible to ask for more FA after admitted

I was accepted by Mount Holyoke as an ED applicant and the college has generously offered me $32,000 FA. However my parents got divorced just a few days ago. Because of this my household finance has been reduced tremendously(And my father has clearly stated that he would not finance me any more). Can I contact the school office, explaining the situation and ask for more FA at this point of time? I am an international student and my I-20 has not been sent yet. Should I contact the office immediately so they can do some changes to my I-20?

I am so sorry your father is divorcing you as well as his wife. Did you ask him what you did wrong to warrant such wonderful treatment from him? Being mad at your mom is no reason to treat you this way. I don’t know that MHC would offer you anything different, because they still require financial info from non-custodial parents and expect them to contribute, but you can always ask. Also, this coming year’s info is based on 2011, and your parents were married in 2011. The fafsa/CSS Profile you fill out in 2013 will reflect this change in marital status. I bet lots of parents would quickly divorce if it meant substantial savings on college expenses or increased financial aid monies.

I am sorry for your situation, However, the school will not give you an appeal of give you more financial aid because of it. As teachandmom stated, your father’s income and assets will still be used to determine whether or not you receive need based financial aid for the next 3 years.

Remember that in order to receive your visa to study in the US, you will show that you have the $$ to pay for your education. If your father is no longer providing financial support for you to attend school, you may end up not getting your visa unless you can get the money from another source.
