Is it possible to be a GM scholar with no leadership roles or awards?

Because I am that person lol. I've tried to explain to the best of my ability as to why I'm not as incredible as I'm sure all the other applicants are. All I have to show for are my volunteer hours, my ap/honors classes and test scores (do they even ask for those?). I honestly have nothing else to show.

So, has anyone won this scholarship by just being an average kid that isn't president of every club?

@vanessa0311, I am a current GMS applicant too. If you are on Facebook, I’d advise you to join the “2013-2014 Gates Millennium Scholars” group. It is an incredible network that connects current applicants, like us, with current Gates scholars. The current Gates scholars provide us with advice and support regarding the application process, especially with the 8 essays!

There you will find some current Gates scholars to answer your question. I know that I did not answer your question lol but I hope you join the FB group. I wish you all the best with the GMS application!

I’m in the same situation as you; I’ve never been press of any club but have always had excellent academics. I’m still applying because honesty who knows and you should too! Don’t cut yourself short

Honestly, I believe that GMSP would want a high achieving, well rounded student. It’s nice you exceeded in academics, but what else do you have to show?
