Is it possible to graduate with a double major in EECS and Econ ahead of time?

Is graduating with a degree in EECS and perhaps Econ or Math before your 7th semester plausible?

I personally would never even think about walking down that path if I were accepted into EECS, but I have a crazy ultra-overachiever cousin that's considering the double major.

I have an idea…tell your “cousin” to give it a try. tell him to let us know if it works out. people learn fastest when they try it out.

@kemkid- He is going to try it out, but he’s an international from Singapore and Berkeley isn’t his top choice (the University of Toronto or MIT is).

His odds of doing this at MIT are not any better than at Cal. Not sure about UofToronto, I have no insight there.

Uhm, I’m pretty sure my suitemate frosh year pulled off something like this (graduated under the EECS honors program in 3 years, after starting from scratch with courses like Phys 7A), and I think he took plenty of classes outside his major. Then again, he often petitioned to take hugely overcrowded unit loads and was very busy.

Also international, from Singapore. He’s highly intelligent and hard-working, and if your cousin is, it’s possible.

mathboy98 - this post was not only for early EECS but a double major, with the other major in a different college.

If he’s international, I’d place my bets on him.

In an ideal world, he should be able to do it by taking the maximum number of units per semester.
But realistically, he’s not going to be able to get the classes he needs due to budget cuts and schedule conflicts.

Actually, once he declares as a double major, his/her telebears appointments jump to the front of the line which really helps in securing places in classes.

just curious - why would your ‘cousin’ pick UofT over berk ?

@ CCNewbie- It’s beyond me. He’s a year ahead already (born in '93) so I don’t know why he would want to graduate a year early anyway. I just asked him over WLM about 6 hours ago and he said it was because of the budget cuts Berkeley is getting. I doubt he’s telling the whole truth though. He also hates the weather in Singapore, meaning he hates the heat there. So maybe it’s because of the weather?

Yes, the Singaporean I mentioned did enough coursework outside his major that would’ve resulted in a double major had his efforts been focused into two specific areas. Instead, he took courses in math, physics, English outside of EECS. And also, I was once in EECS, and aiming to double major with math. I know how feasible it is quite well as such :)
