The only thing i have noticed that all harvard admitees have is that they are all one of the top 5 students in their class. If you are not validictorian in your class (or one of the top 5 students) do you really stand a chance? Has anyone met or heard of a harvard admitee who wasn't one of the top ten students in their class? On their site it says you should be in the top 10%, but do they even go that low? if a person is 30 out of 300, does he stand a chance?

Yes you stand a chance........good luck.

was that sarcasm? it might be sincere, or it might be sarcastic, it almost seems to go both ways. btw: im 32 out of 360

sinceresincere

I wasn't in the top 5 in my class. I wasn't a national winner anything. I don't have any national awards. I'm here.

xjayz are you the discoverer of the cure of the common cold, about whom I have heard so much?

Shark-bite, do you come from a competitive school? If not, being 30/300 is not good.

Oh xjayz, what wicked, heinous, atrocious, perverse thing did you do to get it?

He did the same thing that the rest of us did.

He offered to sacrifice his first born.

A reasonable exchange, if you ask me.

heres kind of what im hoping for. i am/was in the most rigorous schedule our school offers. the thing is that i got a lot of B's in my freshmen and sophmore year. if you count just the 2nd semester of my sophmore year, and this year (quarter grades, semsters wont be out for 2 months) im gettting a weighted 5.0. even though i have the best gpa in my school at the moment, because of my bad frosh year, my cum gpa (and rank) is bad. do you think they will look at just the cum and say not good enough, or do you think they will think that i improved drastically even though it was to late to save my rank. thats what im wondering. i hope harvard doesnt just cut out the non 5%ers as their first line of weeding people out.

I think they'll see your improvement as a positive thing. Of course straight As across the board would be the most ideal. But improvement is viewed favorably.

If you come from Deerfield Academy, you can be ranked 50th and still get into Harvard. On the other hand, you can be ranked 1st and get a rejection. So it doesn't depend that much on it....

How true.......legacy would factor in. All things being euqal:
lesser class rank+legacy= acceptance.

What if your school weighs only AP classes but not honors/accelerated classes. Would Harvard consider your rank then or only your unweighted GPA?

Both.

I am the first born. I just used my first life out of my nine possible ones.

Oh, I didn't go to a NE prep school.

Very fine response..........1st of 9 lives. I love it. Gee with that wit I would have sworn you were a prep.

my public school weighs honors classes and ap classes equally (out of 5) i wish they did it only for aps because im taking the most at my school. then i would be set lol. seriously though, i was looking at the thread where they say whether people go in or not, and it seemed that everyone was different but all were validictorian etc. ya know, since i cant change my rank, i should just make the best of what i have and hope for the best.

Anybody have an answer to my question?

A GPA out of context means VERY little. If you are ranked number one then you are "Da man" at your school and they will see that your grades are top echelon at your school. They also look to see what you have taken and the grades earned in each course...if you are valEdictorian with only honors and few APs then that status will be slightly undermined. If you have taken all the APs at your school (depending how many) then you should be fine.

In my case, I am Valedictorian and I have taken 13 APs out of an offered 12 out of my school. Ah the beauty of online supplement! Online classes/college classes really show that you have intellectual curiosity and want to learn beyond what your school offers. It will be best if your school is block schedule (which is very restrictive) and then you take AP/honors classes for enrichment....VERY impressive in the app. Have your counselor incorporate this direct praise in her letter along with her writing on personality (for RD applicants). Try to find out what ONLY YOU have done in your school. Make them compare you to the best of the best at your school.
For example, my counselor put that the typical TOP senior takes only 7 APs by graduation while I have taken 13 which is the most anyone has ever done in my school. I am among the top 3 students in my whole school for community service. My counselor said that I have taken the hardest schedule that she has seen in her 34+ years teaching and counseling.

get the idea? What have you ONLY done in your school.

THAT is what will impress them.

hope this helps any! :)
