It was really difficult for me to take 4 APs this year (my teachers were very difficult and I think I even had a few anxiety attacks) and I don't think I could handle 5 of them next year. If I took AP English Literature off my schedule for next year, would it look bad since I had AP English Language before? I did well in AP Lang, got an A in the class and feel confident about the exam but English is just not important for the major I want to have and is going to be another headache. I want to get into a really good school but I don't want to be miserable for another year all over again :l

the answer is NO

Where did you even get the idea that you need to take 10 or 9 AP’s?

No, colleges will pay way more attention to other factors besides coarse load such as GPA, test scores, and extracurriculars.

sara

9 AP classes should be more than fine. Don’t worry about it.

The key for college apps is that your counselor marks your course load as being the “most rigorous” available and, with 9 APs, you won’t have any trouble getting that designation.

It is good that you are testing your limits and figuring out what is important to you. I would agree with others who have pointed to the minimal difference a single class will make on your record.

I would caution you however, that at many “really good schools”, the students were able to handle ten or more APs in high school. Keep this in mind when you are putting together your college list. Instead of avoiding one year of being miserable and having headaches, you might be striving for four more years of misery.
