Is it recommended to submit Esssay C: Special Circumstances essays?

I've heard mixed inputs. What's yours? Should one tailor Essay C to their requested major? How did you handle Essay C and what type of impact do you think it held over your admission into UT? Many thanks.

You submit essays for 2 purposes;

  1. admission
  2. scholarships
    Which purpose is yours?

If you read UT’s explanation of optional Essay C and your immediate reaction is, “Wow, what a relief! I’ve been looking all over the app and couldn’t find any place to explain XYZ,” then you probably have a “special circumstance” and should take advantage of the invitation to write about it. On the other hand, if you have to think long and hard to come up with something that sounds like a special circumstance, you probably don’t have a special circumstance (and no worries, it’s not required!). If you’re unsure, prepare a rough draft and run it by your GC.

I submitted essay C and I definitely felt it helped my application. The essay allowed me to explain why my transcript looked a bit funny; I transferred schools midway sophomore year to be in a more challenging environment. Which meant moving to a school where AP didn’t matter because they did all DC :b I basically wanted to supplement my application with anything I could that was reasonable to help in being accepted. I submitted all four essays, even though I was applying for visual arts and didn’t need to do essay A. Essay C is a great opportunity to express something about yourself or your situation that you weren’t able to do with your transcript or resume! (The resume is great to submit as well)
