Is it safe to lie about extracurriculars?

@jdjaguar

maybe you will hire him. People like him always get the best jobs, highest salary, etc. To be honest, he is very smart and know when to lie. This is exactly the thing he needs to success in his business or whatever, but not in his life.

They might get accepted by top univ. or top grad by lying. But they will regret when they get older. Guaranteed.

I am solely talking about lying on the app, NOT after that like in your job interview, etc. Like I said earliers, ECs mean nothing after high school. And if you even have to lie, do it smart and carefully. I myself didn't lie (believe it or not) but I don't get all upset when other people do, especially if it's something as meaningless as this. And as many of you pointed out, the ECs that can be faked won't make much a difference, so who cares?

^

it's not just about YOU lying and got in, it's about someone who should have got in but didn't....

"Like I said earliers, ECs mean nothing after high school."

Not true at all. For adults, ECs are how they network, develop a variety of skills (including the kind of leadership skills that help one get job promotions), contribute to their communities, reduce their own stress, make their lives more interesting, etc. I would have to think long and hard to come up with the names of some successful and/or contented adults who aren't involved in some kind of activities beside working.

ECs also can help one with graduate and professional school admission as well as obtaining job offers.

If you want to be a person who doesn't rise on the career ladder and spends all of their free hours boozing alone while watching TV, then don't get involved in any ECs.

It's only in places like CC where many people think that the purpose of ECs is to get into college. The purpose of ECs is to create a more fulfilling life for yourself, whether those EC activities are clubs, community service, sports or related to one's place of worship.

Dont Lie.... adding an extra hour or week cant hurt etc... but just dont make up an entire activity/presidency

"Dont Lie.... adding an extra hour or week cant hurt etc."

The second part of your statement contradicts the first part. A lie is a lie, no matter how small.

Anyway, any activity that you make up that's impressive enough to tip you into college also would be easy to verify.

^ agree. The stuff you're gonna lie on (the small hours, etc) won't help anyway. So, what's the point? Why risk getting rescinded and whatnot?

Honestly, I think the people that say “you have no morals” or “you’ll go to prison” are truly ■■■■■■■. Put yourself in his shoes. Going to a community college and going to a better college makes a BIG difference when applying for jobs. Careers affect essentially everything about the life you live for the next 60 years (give or take). His life is dependent on the decision the colleges makes. It’s not immoral, he’s just trying to shape his life the way he wants it to look like.

Furthermore, people aren’t stupid. Just because he lied in this one desperate situation, does NOT mean that he’ll lie in every other situation. He’ll know when to lie and when not to. Some of you are saying things like “if you keep this up, you’ll lie to your boss, your wife, etc”. Lying isn’t an addiction. Just because you lied one time (in a decision that affects your life) does not mean you will keep doing it every time. Sure, he might lie here and there in the future, but it will not be because of this. They won’t even be related, because spicing up your college app will not directly cause you to feel free to lie to your boss, wife, and chlidren. It’s not an attitude you keep up, it’s a personality.

bxkx asked if he will get caught. You people telling him that he has “no morals” didn’t even answer the question! He probably doesn’t even need your answers telling him that its the wrong thing to do. You guys are jsut plain stupid. I mean, OBVIOUSLY, bxkx probably already realized that it was the “wrong” thing to do (even though he’s just fighting for a better future), that’s why he asked this question right? If lying on your app was the RIGHT thing to do, this quesiton wouldn’t even exist. So you people are just stating the obvious by telling him it’s “wrong”.

As of now, I totally support what he is doing. And yes, I’m going to tell him that he has a chance of getting caught, fined, and blacklisted and whatnot, but it definitely isn’t immoral. A person’s life shouldn’t be defined by a few sheets of rules. He’s free to do what he wants, and he MIGHT suffer the consequence of his indiscretion, but that’s also a very small chance.

You can lie about certain stuff… Like your passions or stuff like that. Like stretch a truth a little ,nobody becomes successful without a little dirt on your hands. Warren buffet “You dont become rich by being completely Mr.rogers, you have to sometimes burn your competitions forcefully or sometimes even blackmail”

@Omgpop well it doesnt determine considering that community college is just a outlet to get your bachelors without going bankrupt. And people you need to understand you need to lie. What somebody life should be screwed over because he didnt well enough in high school? All becauase he didnt waste his life for the sake of education? That is messed up and it most of the time not true. But college rankings dont really matter as long you have good networking
