Ok, so my friend who is really smart and dreams of going to michigan is visiting in a couple of weeks. For some reason he is really nervous and wants me to accompany him on the trip. The drive is only an hour and a half so that's not a big deal.

The reason I am skeptical about going though is because I am afraid I will love the school too much and end up wanting to go there. I don't think I would be able to get in since I only have a 3.6 gpa with a 28 act and am focused on schools more like MSU and OSU. So should I go to help my friend or not?

Don’t sell yourself short. You’ll never know whether or not you can get into U-M until you apply. Besides, you can even avoid the fee and your application essays could maybe be reused in the future.

Make MSU and OSU your target/safety schools, and Michigan one of your reaches. Try to raise your ACT to 30, and be sure to have a very strong first half of the year next year. Obviously, apply EA.

Silly reason not to visit. Go with your friend and check out the school and city. You might love it or not, but at least you’ll know what it is like.

It’s an interesting concern. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. You do want to feel good about where you go. There are some schools where everyone walks around disappointed and that’s really unhealthy. Also it’s silly. College isn’t that great, any college.

But in general in life, it pays to aim high, to know what’s out there, etc. And MSU and OSU are fine places too. Do you live in Michigan?

3.6 GPA and 28 ACT are probably at the 25th percentile of both, so you’re not necessarily locked out of an acceptance but definitely not locked in.

Also, in state tuition. Again, MSU is a pretty fine place. Are you interested in politics or law. Some prefer the campus. You can try the James Madison program there.

you should definitely go. i got in out of state with a 3.6 and a 31 act so nothing is impossible. now i’ll be spending the next four years in ann arbor starting in the fall. go and enjoy the campus, just don’t make getting in the end all be all.

Well, aside from the somewhat nebulous fear of ‘liking something that might be elusive’, I think the general rule of thumb you ought to run with here is it is NEVER silly to visit someplace you’ve neer been before. It is even less silly when you visit a new place with a friend. And if the place is a fairly vibrant destination like Ann Arbor, words like silly just don’t apply.
