So im from Arizona and when I tell people im going to Syracuse they tell me im gonna freeze to death.

But my other choices were Columbia,UVa, and USC (Cali). I love hot weather and all but people have successfully moved to Syracuse from Texas and Cali, but what I'm sayin is since I'm not accustomed to cold weather anyway, going to columbia or virginia would suck too.. right?

is syracuse THAT much colder than NYC or Virginia..will it be that hard to get used too if I just change my wardrobe?

omg people tell me that ALLLL the time. they tell me about the weather and dont even tell me congratulations. i should be able to handle it. u should too.

syracuse isn't much colder than NYC. You wouldn't be at any advantage going to any other school in NYC, Boston, or the northeast. You'll have to buy the same dang winter coat.

Of course Syracuse is cold, along with many other colleges in the northeast, but I don't think that that should be your deciding factor. Arizona is immensely hot and although I'm from New York, I can say that from experience because I spent a few weeks there over a summer, and yes getting used to the weather won't be the easiest thing but SU is still a great school. I'm not sure what you're planning on studying in, but for some majors (like communications, in my case) it's one of the best in the country. If that's not enough, they also have a great sports program, offer tons of extra-curricular activities, and have so many diverse and interesting students on campus. I know I'm no expert or anything but if you find your niche I don't think it will matter if it's snowing or the sun is out. I've talked to a few people there and they've even told me that most of the time they love the snow. They go outside with their friends and have snowball fights, go sleigh-riding and all those kinds of things. It sounds almost corny but they swear it's fun :D. I mean, I obviously, I'm sure it's different for everyone but I just thought you'd like to now. Good luck with your decision, I don't want to be biased, but my vote goes for SU. Of course, I don't know much about the others but whatever, I know it's a fit for me, and yeah, I'm sure if you take the opportunity you'll find it's a fit for you too.

Virginia's winters are really mild. It's a heck of a lot warmer than NYC. They only got about 3 snows all winter (it hardly ever drops below freezing). Have you been accepted to all these places?

Yes I was accepted to the other schools as well (that was really exciting), but I got way more money from SU, loved the school, and I guess the only neg. was the weather. But yea its official as of today..im going.

But yea melo, alot of people like seriously skip the whole "congratulations" "good job" part and talk about the weather..i had to reply on that cuz i feel u..lol.

Also, thx Dani, ur description of snow fights and other positive SU qualities was hella corny but like comforting as well.

Syracuse is cold. And snowy. The snowiest major city in the entire US, actually, is Syracuse. And also one of the grayest (ie most cloudy days).

People get used to it, though. And it can be fun if you decide to take up winter sports (snowboarding, etc.).

"Virginia's winters are really mild. It's a heck of a lot warmer than NYC. They only got about 3 snows all winter (it hardly ever drops below freezing). Have you been accepted to all these places?"

This is not necessarily true. It really depends on which area of VA you are talking about. SE Virginia around Richmond is mild and does not get that much snow. Inland Areas are much colder. And despite the warmth during the day, it can get colder than NYC at night, but NYC is colder than VA. Many freezes accur throughout the entire state.

I live in NYC. For me, it is not cold and snowy enough. A lot of Times NYC is right on the border for snowstorms. Out northern Suburbs get a lot more snow. Syracuse gets Lake Effect snow and waaay more than NYC. Fortunately we have been very lucky and have had 4 straight winter with 40"+ of snow. NYC can get pretty cold, just the urban heat island effect does not allow temps to be as cold as Syracuse. NYC has not recorded a temp below 0 for 13 years, while syracuse gets many every winter.

I would never live south of NYC since once you get futher south, you really get less snow and I personally think VA winters suck.

If anyone has any weather questions feel free to PM me

IYUHoosiers1, I live on the border between northern Virginia and Maryland. I can tell you that it can get cold in our area. However, based on what I see on the weather channel. it never gets as cold here as it gets in Syracuse. In addition, Syracuse gets a LOT more snow.

This winter has been one of the most mild winters in decades. We had 50-60 degree days for most of the winter. I don't know if that can be said of Syracuse.

I live in Buffalo, which is like 3 hours west of Syracuse aka colder than Syracuse...and yes, it gets damn cold. But you'll get used to it. Wouldn't wanna be coming from Arizona...that'll take a while to get used to. Our summers will be cold to you -lol. This is why I'm movin' South for college!! I hate the cold!!

Hey LoveTrack. I'm from Fl and going. I'm sure it'll be ok- we'll just bundle up a little extra and be the only ones making giddy fools of ourselves at the first snow. Dani's right (and ought to be offered a job writing the next Syracuse view book), the weather is a pretty weak reason to turn down a great program. We'll have beaks often enough to soak up some sun and head back into the city of snow refreshed. My bro got through 4 years in Rochester that way (though he's a little tougher- he was 6 when we moved from Buffalo to Fl, I was 2. GetOuttaBuffalo- which part are you from?). My Floridian friends seem to be under the impression that Syracuse isn't cold...I don't think they know where Syracuse is. I've been told to bring a sun lamp to keep the gray skies from getting me down- you could do the same (though I dn if they're really safe). Anyway gl making the decision. Hopefull I'll see you this fall (look for the only other person on campus w/ a tan. jk).

lol @ Threekid'skid. Ill be bundling up with u guys. u kno when youre little and your mom bundles u up so tight that your arms strick str8 out? thats gonna be me!

but hey! yey! thats two more kids i kno are going. Threekid'skid and LoveTrack. cant wait to see u guys there!!

This is so weird...we're all getting to know each other before we get to know each other. I sense a facebook club coming on. Anyone know when we get our e-mail addresses?
It'll be odd if/when we actually meet each other in the fall...we'll hafta wear carnations, or CC t-shirts, or something so we recognize each other. Anyway, I'm glad to see the forums don't slow down any after the bulk of the process is over. It's comforting in its way.

yea we can wear t shirts with out sn on them. i already got my su email address. they shoulda sent u a post card about how to get that. its the one where they talk about the housing and all that. when do we get our facebook stuff??

It is cold, but you will absolutely get used to it. Sometimes it's so cold, windy and snowy it's just funny... but remember there are 10,000 other kids (plus professors) dealing with it as well. Classes are never, ever canceled and the snow plows take care of the roads and all sidewalks and walkways before 8am so you'll never have to really schlep around in it. And truthfully, it can be kind of cozy watching movies with friends, ordering food and staying inside. A lot of the dorms have underground passageways to the dining halls so you don't even have to put your coat on before brunch on the weekends. You'll be fine.

It can get cold here but it isn't as bad as other areas, the bigger problem is the snow. Syracuse is the snowiest metropolis in the US but we have great snow removal so it isn't bad at all.
