Is it the school or is it the fit?

To name some schools I know people on FA international

Hotchkiss, Deerfield, SPS, Exeter, Andover, South Kent, Holderness, Choate, Wichendon (sp?), Brewster, Vermont Academy, Westminster, Milton, Hoosac, Hebron, NMH just to name a few. The names of domestic FA is far beyond this.

No one is saying that the only successful people around are people who have emerged from top tier boarding schools, nor is anyone asserting that there are no exceptions to the general trend of international students being offered less FA from lower-tier schools than they do from top-tier schools.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think many schools treat FA differently for Canadians than other internationals, especially for hockey recruits.

I think I heard from mmoynan that in Exeter’s admissions process, Canadians are treated as domestic applicants. I, however, live in England.

Tom, sorry if I miffed you…that is not what I intended to imply. I was simply putting it out there to readers that there are many viable options, especially if academics is not your strongest attribute.
Creative: while some of the FAs I am talking about are for hockey, most are not. But all did have a significant hook to offer their respective schools.
As for domestic vs international, all schools except one had us apply as an international but I am sure it does vary from school to school.

Well at the end of the day…majority of kids that get on here and seek information are applying to HADES schools. If people get annoyed by it, then just don’t read those threads. If anyone wants to talk about other schools it’s fine…but claiming that people are obsessed with name is absurd to me. It’s human nature…if you feel you’re one of the best…you search for the best to be around people like yourself. I don’t think you can fault anyone for that…nor do I think people should keep complaining about how often HADES is mentioned. People make threads about other schools all the time…I mean if they die they die.

I mean I understand the point being made, but it’s almost all talk. Kids like this : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/472628-any-questions-about-isl-schools-4.html</a>
Come through asking for help on a school I’ve never heard of. If the people who don’t want to talk about HADES 24/7 (which I don’t think is the case), help the kid out and start the conversation.

^ And if anyone had the chance (even if you are on of those HADES naysayers) to get into/go to a heads gcm school I am sure that they would. It is sort of irritating, I thing most of the angst comes from Parents/teachers/students are the non heads gcm schools who want to help us, though.

^^Not so, pv. My son had an excellent shot for admittance to a HADES, chose not to apply. He has visited several; we live near some of them. Not his style at all. He had known for years he wanted to attend NMH.

Cool, sorry for making that generalization! I gleaned that from “lurking” around some posts, some non HADES parents/etc. get a little irate when the only topic of concern are the top schools.

I think we have a different perspective on the schools because we do live so close to many of them. My son already knows kids at many of them and has visited. They are not as cloaked in mystery for us. Not saying anything is wrong with them, either! If I had the opportunity growing up, I probably would have chosen SPS or Exeter. He just fell in love with NMH, same as his big brother. In their case, that was the best “fit” even though they could have gone for the higher prestige schools.

I think we have a different perspective on the schools because we do live so close to many of them. My son already knows kids at many of them and has visited friends/been on the campuses. They are not as cloaked in mystery for us. Not saying anything is wrong with them, either! If I had the opportunity growing up, I probably would have chosen SPS or Exeter. He just fell in love with NMH, same as his big brother. In their case, that was the best “fit” even though they both had a legitmate shot ath the higher prestige schools.

I really thought I should go to SPS, and it was my first choice before interviewing, but after my tour I found that it wasn’t my style at all. I got waitlisted and may have been able to get in, but I just loved the feel of Mx sooo much better. Even if I had gotten an outright acceptance to SPS, I think I would have chosen Mx. Just my two cents

My son was offered an invitation by a coach at a hades as well but he did not pursue it despite being a very strong student. It was not what he has looking for and I respect his wishes. We have many friends at HADES schools and they are FANTASTIC schools. I guess I am not eloquent enough to express what I am trying to say without upsetting people. I think it would just make CC an even better resource for perspective students/parents if there was discussions about all different types of prep schools. While it is true that threads die away quickly when they are not about exeter or andover, they are still useful. I know when I first came to this site this summer, I was just doing searches and reading old threads to give me an overview. Even short threads on different schools are of benefit to the uninitiated. Those of you who choose a tier one school have no doubt heard of other schools and could offer some insight to those who have no experience and perhaps are too daunted by the high stats of the regular posting students on this sight to ask questions…Fit is so different for each student that even the most wonderful school can not be right for everyone.

I agree with you. I think those who are on CC are those looking for the top (for whatever reason it may be)… The reason the HADES, HEADS, HEADS GCM, whatever you want to call it, came into being was some prominent people starting referring to top high schools as the heads gcm’s.

I would love to read more about other schools. My motivation to go to a heads gcm, and maybe some others like NMH etc, is the financial aid they offer. Even though I do not need any FA, the diversity it provides is amazing. :)

Go for fit, not for name and you will be happier in the end. Lets talk about all schools.

But remember…just because a school has a name doesn’t mean it won’t be a good fit. A lot of parents feel like there 13 year old needs a “nurturing” environment. And some do…just keeping open to everything would be the best idea

Perhaps I should have worded it “go for fit regardless of name”. If I had gone only for name I would have missed visiting some of my favorite schools. We went to many. While I did not apply, we visited some schools that were surprising. One we visited was Kimball Union. It is a school that is trying to increase its appeal and the campus is beautiful and the students were very welcoming. Academics were not what I was looking for but could be interesting to someone else. They are recruiting athletes to strengthen their already good athletic teams.

I’m a big proponent of the “big fish in a little pond” theory. Unfortunately, we’ve never been able to make that work for my son with regard to education. I would LOVE to find a lesser-known school (smaller pond) that has a strong science program and would be able provide substantial FA for my son. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to locate such a program.

He is currently in a public school IB program that, with regard to matriculation, available courses, etc., compares favorably with the top boarding schools in the country in every area but one: science. My son just happens to be a scientist. He is past ready to take the AP/IB science courses, but won’t be allowed to take them for IB credit until 12th grade because you can’t take your “major” IB tests until 12th grade. If he wants the IB diploma, he has to do things their way. So we are being forced to decide which AP/IB science classes he’s going to take without getting the full credit for the next three years (there are only two additional AP/IB classes in science, anyway, so he’s still out of options for one year). Also, his school’s labs are so poor that upper-level science students have to do their labs at the local university at night two nights per week.

I would LOVE to know if any of you know of schools outside of the usual supects that offer more than four or five AP level or above science classes (independent studies would qualify) AND have more than a couple of full-tuition scholarships available. (Merit aid is a possibility since my son has upper 90’s SSAT’s, straight A’s, national awards in several subject areas, etc.) Like many others here on CC, we are not elitist in our approach to BS apps. We simply have needs that seem to only fit the offerings of the most elite schools. We would be anxious to take a closer look at ANY BS that offer strong science programs and facilities as well as high potential for significant financial aid.

While academics are not strong in every subject, I heard that Brooks science program is good. I heard they have great science internships offered there. It is certainly a small school and they do offer FA.

how do you make a post?..im new
