Exeter or Andover???

Everyone's gonna have their bias here, and mine is ANDOVER.

Laid back student body, about a million ECs and sports, beautiful campus, short distance from Boston, more central location... There are a whole bunch of reasons that Andover appealed to me more than Exeter did, but I still think the main reason that I liked it more was the fact that I identified more closely with what I determined to be, again, a really laid back (and nonetheless EXTREMELY intelligent) student body.

I know I'm being really crazy, since it's a really long way away from March 10 but I was just wondering, since these 2 schools seem to be on everyone's list...

if you got into both andover AND exeter, which one would you choose and why???

yea i agree, andover's student body seemed to be alot more laid back and "happy" than exeter's. from the tour, andover seemed to be more appealing, but are exeter's courses better than andover's?

People at Exeter say that their academic departments are stronger than any other New England boarding school, but I think that Andover students would probably say the same about their academic departments. I can tell you, though, that comparing the academics of these two schools is just splitting hairs as it is like comparing perfection to flawlessness: they both are the more or less the same. But with such large student bodies, both Andover and Exeter are free to offer a huge variety of very strong courses, so it really would not be possible to go wrong either way.

I love the way that my posts are coming "before" all of yours. I have now "claimed" the thread (my name shows up as the OP) and it looks like we're both holding conversations with ourselves: me at the top, you at the bottom. Seriously, did CC always do this this badly? I've been noticing it especially in the last day or two

I AM applying to both, and if I get into the two... Oh god it's actually going to be so hard. I loved Exeter's art program, their campus, the academics. But I never met with the volleyball coach and I don't know anything about their program. Also, Choate is my top choice, so it doesn't matter where else I got in if I get in there, haha. But Andover and Exeter? Exeter's in the lead so far, but if it came down to volleyball (which it probably will) Andover wins.

I know someone who was accepted to both A/E a couple years ago. She chose Exeter mainly because at the revisit days she really liked the faculty at E.

does anyone know what's wrong with this thread? i can't really figure out what's supposed to go where...

Don't worry glitters426 it's not anything you did when starting the thread. This has been happening all over CC the past few days.

I visited both Andover and Exeter, and I personally liked Exeter better. It just felt right, and Andover didn't feel like it would be a good for me. (Plus at Exeter, my tour guide was a freshman girl who shared some of my interests, while at Andover it was a senior guy who was nothing like me.)

Lol I'm sure there's a freshman girl at Andover that also like math swims and plays tennis.

Exeter's campus is laid out so much better than Andover's.. we have academic buildings mostly one one side, with the other side being mostly dorms. Everything is close to each other and smartly designed. Andover's campus has everything spread out apart; it's hard to find things and make sense of what the architects were thinking.. In terms of academics, we're pretty much neck in neck; however, Exeter's math program is very, very strong.

Andover's campus is a lot prettier than Exeter's! Andover's is a lot more natural and less compacted... With Andover, it's like walking through a little village. With Exeter you can always tell you're walking around a school because the whole thing feels so contained! As for the architects, Andover's buildings are beautiful. Just because Andover doesn't have a giant poured-concrete library (that is probably the biggest waste of space on campus, what with the giant empty central atrium) doesn't mean that Andover's architects aren't as on the ball as Exeter's.

After all, where's your Commons? Where's your Addison gallery?

Oooh... I can definitely feel the rivalry beneath those polite and carefully constructed posts.

I love the passive aggressiveness in this thread.

passive aggressiveness. haha big word xD I remember it from reading the metamorphosis but ANYWAYS

I'm kind of mixed between exeter and andover

Yeah, that huge library does kind of seem like a waste ( 1/4 of those books you might actually want to read as a novel, other 3/4 might be encyclopedia... I think the internets good enough for me >< just me though) AND exeter has an awkward dress code but I kind of liked their approach to teaching more

andovers nice (dress code is free too! )
I just can't seem to decide... they're both equal in terms of athletics, extracurricular opportunities and stuff... I guess I'll just be nitpicky if I get accepted

i'm a little leaning towards andover now :)

and doesn't exeter have a time limit for internet connections or something? andover's internet's availible 24/7.

since exeter is really strong in math (stronger than andover?), is andover really really strong in english?

There's no sense of organization at Andover. It's unnecessary to have such a large campus; do you really want to walk such long distances to classes? Architecturally speaking, I'm thinking of how the campus was designed - the Cage is randomly next to the athletic fields and what not. We do have an art gallery and recently had a famous Japanese artist showcase his interesting techniques. As for our library, a lot of our material is comprised of primary sources for history classes - we believe that giving you a hands-on look at what happened during that time period can only help you further your research. And don't forget the whale skeleton hanging inside the Phelps Science Center that students reconstructed in a marine biology class.

E/a are about the same in English.

Exeter's campus is only smaller by 50 acres: 450 compared to Andover's 500. As for organization, as I said earlier, Andover fits more into the town of Andover's vernacular. Apart, of course, from Sam Phil and the Gelb Science Center, Andover feels like a part of the town of Andover. It's completely sewn into the town. Exeter, on the other hand, is so contained that it's like its own little world. Whether you think this is a good thing or not is down to you, but I, personally, like Andover's sense of a university town. Again, I'm applying to both, and I'd love to go to either.

As for the whale skeleton, yeah, that's pretty damn cool. I spent a while looking at that while I was visiting. But your art gallery? That wasn't even part of the tour and you can't seriously argue that it's better than the Addison. As someone with a passion for photography, the Addison would be an important part of my Andover career. When it's finished its renovations it should be even more fantastic than it was before.

false.
Exeter is bigger than Andover by 119 acres.
But campus size doesn't matter in this discussion; if that were the case
you should go to St.Paul's.

I'm surprised you are an applicant.
You almost passed as an actual Phillipian--love your passion.

No matter which school you think is THE best, it is indubitable
that both Exeter and Andover are amazing schools.
