Someone told me that no one has been rejected and everyone who has not been accepted was put on the waitlist. If this is true then I have lost all respect for Cal Poly Pomona.
I know a few people that have gotten denied and they had GPAs just under 3.0
@jkleve Were they freshmen applicants or transfers?
They were transfers. All computer science which is impacted which may be the reason. I did get in and I have a 3.5
Does anyone know if any freshmen applicants have been rejected?
Not true. There were over 48,000 applicants this year, and roughly 3,600 freshmen seats available. Not too sure about transfers, but CPP seems to reject freshmen with under qualified stats / missing documents first, then wait list people who meet the target or minimum requirements. They do this in order to assess whether they can fit in the wait listed people depending on the number of accepted students who choose to attend. Judging by 2015’s forum, quite a few people get rejected from the wait list as there simply isn’t enough space to admit them into the school.
@Tokitoki If your stats are correct, that means CPP had an acceptance rate of 7.5% this year. Are you sure that is correct?
CPP admits 3x as many applicants than spots so if 3600 freshman seats are available, then they admitted around 10,800.
@nobelcollegekid They accept far more than they have seats for, since not everyone will accept. Their acceptance rate as of 2015 was 39.3%.
Ok, I misread your post. I thought you said they admitted 3600 out of 48000. Sorry about that.
Will they consider your alternate major ?
Yes they consider your alternate major before they decide to waitlist you
Why do they admit that many? It can’t be that 2/3 of the admitted class would not attend!
I am getting desperate. I was placed on the wait list, and with every day that goes by I think the chances of getting in are lower and lower. I’m a Sociology major. I am going to accept Sacramento. I didn’t even consider it, I just didn’t know where else to send applications. I’ll accept it but definitely forfeit if I get into Pomona. I’m from LA. Is there still a chance this late into the game?
@buttercupbakery Relax, if you are on the wait-list you have a chance. How good of a chance depends on your major. Last year they accepted 20% of those who applied for Sociology. This is actually good news because it means that many high stat students were accepted, which means it is likely that they were accepted into a better school than CPP and might chose that school over CPP. While this is just speculation, it could very well be reality. CPP does not post waitlist statistics unfortunately (to my knowledge) so there is no way of knowing how many people are pulled from the waitlist. However, CPP does release their yield rate (the % of students who accept admission offers) which is quite low at 25%. This means that 75% of admitted students do not attend CPP! Your chances really depend on luck and how desirable your major is. Good luck.
when do you think they will start accepting people off the waitlist? ( Music Major) when I called, they said Mid June, I am getting very discouraged. I will need to accept another cal state but will forfeit if CPP accepts me (
Many people are in your position @force76
Unfortunately, I have no idea why Cal Poly decided to go with this system. Would’ve been easier to reject people in general all together, but I guess this whole wait list fiasco is there to give people hope.
I think it’s because most people apply to multiple colleges and thus may get multiple acceptances. Since many of the students who do get multiple offers don’t end up confirming with Cal Poly, those spots can be offered to waitlisted applicants, although they typically will initially will put out more offers than there are spaces available in the winter months knowing this so few waitlisted applicants get lucky.
Could it have anything to do with Cal Poly Pomona transitioning from the quarter system to the semester system? Maybe they’re being cautious because of that since they’re in transition?
