Is it worth applying to a top university or should I just work hard and transfer?

Average Student
Screwed up in High School but definitely capable of success
I realized my mistakes and am ready to fix them

GPA: 3.25 (As and a lot Bs, only a few Cs)

ACT: 24 (taken cold, taking again in sept. expecting 25 to 28, taking a prep course)
No real excuse here just extreme hatred and apathy for standardized tests

ECs:
Captain of Varsity Wrestling Team
JV Cross Country
Internship in Michigan House of Representatives
Internship with University of Michigan Dearborn Professor
100+ Volunteer Hours
Student Council

Awards:
Honor Roll
Leadership Award
Science Fair Honorable Mention
Varsity Wrestling Award
Varsity Letter Award
Honors Courses: 3

APs: 0 (school only offers 3 and they were all in history (hate history))

State of Residency: Michigan

Recommendations:
University of Michigan Professor
A State Representative

1 Teacher (very good recommendation and I can get more)

Could you see me getting into any Ivy, Stanford, etc. (especially Brown)?
Basically top 20 school

I realize I probably have the some of the worst academic credentials on this site and my application would probably be laughed at.

I do have a few possible "hooks"

-overcome hemophilia
-having the worst grades in the application pool (lol)
-definite passion for learning (as much as anyone with a 4.0)

As of now no schools on my application list even remotely compare to them. Highest ranked school on my list is Boston University.

So as of now I plan on just trying to transfer after working hard. Also my IQ is a 142 if that helps at all (i doubt it). Also the application fee isnt a problem. Prepared for rejections

So I expect everyone on this site will laugh at me so lets hear it. So what top school should I bother with.

There is no loss in trying. Just apply and see what happens.

If you can get a high score on the ACT, then you have a shot at Michigan, which is a top university.

also just to add im not getting sucked into the whole must go to good college thing I just think I would regret it if i didnt apply to at least one.

Also I didnt take the SAT or SAT IIs

The top 20 seem a bit out of reach at the moment, but I think you might be a little to concerned with the rankings. Dont go to say, Michigan State or a small LAC with the intention of transferring to a “better” college. As for getting into a top university, all the ivies/stanford and maybe even BC seem like huge reaches unless you could possibly wrestle in college?

lol i live in walking distance to UMich I am incredibly sick of looking at the campus (see it almost everyday) and want to get away from it

does anyone think colleges will look past average academic credentials

isn’t Michigan a top 20 school?

i think i got some solid ECs those are just the main ones i felt worth mentioning

so could anyone just give me some schools

just humor me

Your best case would be to raise that ACT and get into Ann Arbor. There are no better school that you could get in as easily. It is a very good and prestigious school.

It is probably much harder to transfer to a top school from college than study endless for the ACT and get into UMich. (Answer to your questions, no and maybe)

anything other than UMich ill be 5 minutes from home

Kids in CCs in our area transfer to top schools often … from the honors program. Transfers from CCs are preferred. There is actually a special program connected with UCLA.

With my D, if she does not get into a school she enjoys and is worth it at the end of the day … $$ and time … she will take a gap year, travel etc. and try again.

I think you need to worry about where you can get in reasonably now. Worry about transferring and stuff later. Right now, those schools are incredibly unrealistic.

Here we go again. Another new thread, same question, similar responses, yet you don’t want to accept the reality of your situation. Please CC posters, this student has multiple threads asking the same thing over and over again. He receives similar responses to all of his threads. The problem is, he doesn’t want to accept the reality of the situation he is in. Re-read the responses to your other threads. Many have given you honest and reality based answers to your college quest.

Alright, fine, john6391, you will NOT get into any Ivy (including Brown), Stanford, or any other top 20 school. You’re wasting time and money by even applying.

Just a few of the threads regarding his “chances”. It goes on and on. It will continue to go on and on until he gets the responses that he wants. Read the threads and see how his ACT of 23 changes to ACT of 24 without retaking the test. Read about how it’s not his fault regarding getting caught plagerising (spelling?). Read how his father is fabricating a college recommendation for him.

The only Top 20 school you even have a shot at is UMich… and you dont want to be there so no.

Usually I would say no, it’s better to try to get into a good school directly because most top universities are so hard to transfer into. But you don’t have a shot at the schools you want to go to if you apply as a freshman. So maybe you could try the transfer route instead.

obviously there are differences in these questions. this by no means a chances thread. im asking for a suggestion for a good school that really looks past academics. I am not asking the same questions and i guess to all you people unless you have great grades your not gonna get anywhere.

“read how ACT went from 23 to 24”
I did retake the test State testing at school was 23
national testing in June was a 24.

“read about dad fabricating recommendation”
I believe you admitted in your post an apology were realized you misread my posts
