UCLA is obviously a elite school with the highest applications and a low accpetance rate. Engineering is even more competitive. I also like UCLA and it is one of the top choices on my list. At first I wanted to do bio major for premed, but now I plan on doing engineering as I like it and its more safe in terms of jobs, and i can do a few premed courses to see if i like them. Anyways I plan on eithr majoring in chemE of matE aka MSE.
Assuming i get accpeted- i prolly wont- I will probably be accepted to other schools such as UCs as UCLA is my biggest reach.
Anywyas, if i get into UCLA for chemE, i will probably get into UCSB for it. And i prefer UCSB over UCLA for chemE.
If i get into UCLA for Materials, i will probably get into SLO for it. And i prefer SLO over UCLA for materials.
So UCLA is a top choice but not top 2
I want to go there and its In state, and i like the area and stuff, however 1) i rather pick UCSB or SLO over it, and 2) its a reach.
So is it worth applying to this reach?
Well, if you gave us your UC GPA someone may be able to answer your question.
If you do not apply, you will never know, so ahead and apply. You are not required to accept if you do not want to attend.
@TomSrOfBoston: From OP’s many other threads:::
I have 4.08 UC GPA and 1460 SAT and ECs include science opmypiad event coordinator and i will start tutoring.
^^
so i shud apply?
Go for it.
Apply broadly, especially since you plan to apply for engineering which has acceptance rates at most CA schools much lower than the overall acceptance rate. For example, the acceptance rate for UCLA Engineering this year was about 12% and some majors were under 10%. UCSB engineering has an acceptance rate of about 15-19% in recent years which is much lower than the approximately 34% overall rate. It’s super competitive, so go in with your eyes wide open and don’t assume that any of the competitive CA schools are a sure thing.
ok thanks for the advice.
i guess ill apply- prolly wont get in but…
If you don’t apply, you have a 100% chance of not getting in. Write great essays - they can be key! Do not take them lightly. Look for threads from March of this year to get some idea of the stats kids have that got accepted (or didn’t) at the schools you’re interested in. If your school has Naviance check that out too in order to see how students do from your school.
I think it would be good for you to apply to UCLA since acceptances at UCs don’t always follow a consistent pattern. Sometimes it happens that kids get accepted into more competitive campuses but are turned down or not given their major at the less competitive ones. You will have a better chance of having good choices if you apply to more campuses.
Since you’re doing the UC application anyway, you might as well check the box and pay the fee to apply to UCLA. For your intended majors, I don’t think you can consider any of these schools as “guaranteed”–you should apply to all of the UC schools that have your major, as well as CSUs and others, e.g. Arizona State.
