Is it worth applying to UT Austin?

I am currently making my college list, and I was considering whether to apply for UT Austin or not. I know UT Austin emphasizes class rank a lot, and I also know that the standards for class rank are much higher for OOS students. My stats can be viewed here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1791698-chances-for-these-universities.html#latest

New info: I got a 3 on the AP Chem exam and a 5 on the APUSH exam.

My school does not rank, but I am estimating (based on my unweighted gpa and deciles for my school) my class rank to be in between 10%-15%. Is this too low to have a good shot at UT Austin?

Class rank is most important for in state students at UT Austin due to the automatic admission policy. For the remaining seats, it is very competitive particularly for OOS. GPA 3.73 and ACT 32 for engineering, it should be a low reach. You would have a better chance at Wisconsin and Purdue.

@billcsho What rank is considered “good” for OOS students?

@QuiteAverage90 At my school, the average GPA for an admit at UT Austin is 3.71 which roughly translates to around top 40% at our school. The average admit SAT score is around 2190 for my school.

Rank only matters to UT for in state. They hate it but it is state law. UT would rather do holistic admission. OOS is all about grades, test scores, and other typical high end school variables. Unless you fit a niche they want to fill, your chances are low.

@QuiteAverage90 oh yeah and we are OOS

@Torveaux I looked at the admissions profile for OOS students, and the ACT average is 30 (but is probably a lot higher for engineering), and even though there is no gpa listed, I’m going to assume that a 3.8+ unweighted is needed to have a chance at engineering, based on other threads that I have seen. I’ll probably still apply, but I won’t have very high hopes for getting in.

FYI. The mid 50 ACT for UT Austin Engineering last year was 30-34. Most students are from in state though, so OOS students are expected to be at the higher end.
