I want to gain admissions to MIT, Cornell, UCSB or UCLA. I didn't make the deadline last year because I had other exams to write and SAT would have just been to stressful. So I'm taking a Gap year. Some of my friends think it's a stupid idea because they may not accept me and what am I possibly going to be doing for a whole year??? While some others think its worth a try. Please do colleges frown at Gap Years and what can I possibly do?? Can I do A-levels instead and still be admitted as freshmen!! I'm confused and I really want to make this schools. Everything seems to be on track apart from SATs! Any advice please??

Top schools don’t frown on gap years - but it also depends on what you are doing with your time. It needs to be something worthwhile rather than just practicing for your SAT and hanging around.

I’m assuming, of course, that you can afford these schools. If you are expecting a lot of financial aid/scholarships and are international, these schools are all long shots even for the best students with the best test scores, so have a solid Plan B.

The colleges and universities on your list are fully aware of the A-levels, and will expect that you take them if it is normal for students in your country to do so.
