is it worth going to precollege when you know you are not going to need the college credit?

for example, let's say I was applying to an ivy with the intended major of pre-med. would it look strange or odd if i went to a pre-college program for art?

i think i am going to go no matter what the responses are, as long as i have the finances. but i would like to know the general opinion.

what are you guys doing this summer? :)

From what I’ve heard, many colleges don’t consider your major until you get in. Some don’t even allow you to declare a major until you finish your freshman year (MIT included). Based on that, I’d say that college credit in any subject is good. I’m not an expert on college admissions, though.

By the way, pre-med isn’t a major. You’re considered “pre-med” if you do internships and take courses required for medical school.

The good part of taking a pre-college course is to “test drive” a particular subject/major or to just explore a passion (in your case Art). My daughter took a pre-college course at Marist College a couple of years ago and it really got into the subject matter. It confirmed that she wanted to major in that subject. She did receive college credit but because she got a tuition waiver she will still be taking the Intro course at her new college in the Fall (even though she doesn’t need to take it).

If you have a passion for Art then there is nothing wrong with gaining further knowledge on a subject of your passion. Good luck!!
