Hello! I recently got accepted to Parsons with a $24,000 scholarship, art is my passion but I’m afraid to make the leap of going to just an art school with no backup. Is it worth it to go to art school or should I just go to a liberal arts school and study art and something else? I’m interested in studying Fine and Studio arts, which is why I’m hesitant to go to art school since fine arts aren’t known for being a lucrative path. I applied to the NYU art program as my first choice and was declined. Right now I’m really between going to Parsons or Bard. Is it wise to risk going to art school?
Parsons has some other liberal arts programs besides arts if you are only looking into liberal arts majors, and parsons is excellent for liberal arts majors. However, Bard is an excellent school as well, and I believe has many more majors to choose from. If you are only thinking of liberal arts majors offerred at parson’s I would go there, but otherwise I would choose bard if you are considering other majors. I actually had a similar decision except I was looking at science schools vs liberal arts, and ended up choosing liberal arts because I was deciding between math, physics, and history so I chose CUNY. I am very happy with my decision because I am a liberal arts minor and math major which I couldn’t have done at some science schools I was looking at. I wish you the best of luck with your decision. Also, do what you love not what makes money.
P.S. you can always do art teaching with a specialization in studio art so you have a fall back option if finding a job is what you are worried about.
The way you do art teaching at my school is you do a major in a fine art and then minor in teaching and then you do the certification sequence in addition to the normal art major sequence
What is your net cost wrt your budget?
Debt above the federal level isn’t a good idea for an arts major.
