poetgrl, I’ll take your “offer” under advisement…although the jump to “you shut me off, I’ll shut you off” seems sort of odd to me. Maybe we could learn something from one another.

And yes, narcissism is central in my “theory,” as in no one escapes having it, while acknowledging that some handle it better than others. But I do know enough to know that the ones denying it aren’t the ones handling it the best. I’m guessing you know that too.

final child, since you said to Tex that you are trying to get to the bottom of the judging and why it is okay coming from one direction or certain posters, and since you have a Psych doctorate, you KNOW how communities and group dynamics work.

You are a new poster, and many of these arguments people are having are old and rather long standing. Some of the fact that you are on here as a newcomer to the conversation blasting old posters, given your understanding of group dynamics, gets you noticed and responded to in a way most new posters don’t even get acknowledged.

But all of us were new once and all of us had to be vetted over time. The first thread I went on with a bone to pick about wait lists, back when my daughter had decided to turn one down? I was shot out of the air and stomped all over. I actually think you are receiving a fair hearing compared to many new people.

This is only one subject. There are others on CC. They come up all the time.

To me, some like to argue, and some care about their opinion. And their opinion is that, to a certain degree depending on which specific poster you are referring to, they don’t believe the college attended matters that much. And I don’t think we should be implying they are lying about their feelings, or trying to read some sort of conclusion about their true beliefs based on the number of posts they have.

Let me give an exaggerated example. It’s ridiculous I know.
Suppose I honestly believe my 1998 Saturn (my actual car) is just as good as a Rolls Royce. I may think there is value in that opinion for someone who is debating selling their house to buy a Rolls Royce. Maybe I have experience with both Rolls and Saturn and I honestly like Saturn better. Suppose I go on the auto website and there are constantly threads coming up by people planning to go into hock for the Rolls. And every time they come up, I jump in and make a bunch of posts because I vehemently believe in my position. I don’t think it’s fair for somebody to come on and draw the conclusion that I don’t really believe what I’m writing but that I really subconciously ache for the Rolls. Yes, I post a lot on the car forum. THat doesn’t mean I don’t believe what I’m saying.

Now that’s not the reason I post. I just like to argue. My opinion is actual somewhere in the middle, to the extent I really have one. And I do personally have a twinge of jealousy over where your daughter gets to go to school. For me, not my kid. Cause he couldn’t care less.

Can I submit a common app. to the CC elites for vetting? Can anyone chance me for admission with only a 3,301 post count? Am I wasting my time? Should I apply to the lower-ranked CC Caf

I do, but it’s not a PhD and it comes from a lowly ranked state school so it doesn’t really count. ;)

I think there is a CC rule that we can only bestow a degree from MIT on people who won the USAMO. So you’ll have to settle for CIT. Enough acronyms for you?

Poetgrl re: #404…Understood, but I’m 50+, so I’m not really in to a vetting period. I am sorry if I am getting into old ground or repeating old arguments. Although I’m sure no one would be convinced given my posting today/tonight, I don’t have time to read the site “cover to cover.” The snarkiness back and forth (and I’m as ready as the next person to veer off in that direction) actually confuses what the discussion is about. I think some of my prior longer posts today describe my positions. There are some things about elitism I accept. There are many I lament. There are weaknesses within myself in this regard that I lament. I believe that what underlies the arguments and passion in this thread, other CC threads, and probably even ol’ bovertine’s engineering internet site are common to all of us and indeed intrinsic to who we are.

You will be fine. Just hold your line. We will get used to you. People will eventually shorten your Screenname. It happens to anyone who sticks around with a strong position.

I hope this tip of the cap to you doesn’t result in me being aligned with you, because…brace yourself…I don’t think you’re getting in…and I do still want to get in.
