Is it worth it to stay another year at a CCC for the chance of getting into my dream shcool?

It has come to my attention that it is very possible I will get rejected from the Haas school of business at UCB this Friday. I am a current freshman and have been able to make my schedule work for me and I have been accepted to UCSB for financial mathematics already (as a junior). I have been able to effectively skip a year of college, but should I take it?

I don’t have research contributions nor do I have stellar extracurricular activities. During my interview for Haas, the nice woman that interviewed me explained to me that a vast majority of Haas acceptances already have some physical connection to UCB.

Given all of this information, I am decently sure I will not get in. On the other hand, if I decide to stay at my CCC for one more year (to make it my second year at a CCC) I will have the chance to do research and business internships over the summer. I will also be able to enter into some leadership positions in both the business club and AS student government. This will vastly increase my chance of getting into Haas.

Should I stay at my current CCC if I get rejected from UCB and try again next year, or should I take my acceptance at UCSB and just move on?

p.s.- Thank you to anyone that helps, I understand it is a weird situation, I am just trying to plan my summer semester now and if I am going to stay at my CCC I need to decide quickly so that I can build my schedule.

So you was only at cc for one year? You got AP credits covered to be a junior transfer?

Yes exactly, I had over 11 AP exams I had to report. I also did really hefty semester loads and took all the hard classes this fall (calc 2 ect…) so that they would be done prior to their decisions

Just wait till friday!!!

In my opinion there’s no downside to staying an extra year if you really think it’s going to help you. I think as long as you know you can keep your gpa where it is, or increase it, you should be fine. If UCB is your dream school, I say take the year to strengthen your app. Good luck, hopefully you end up getting accepted and won’t need to stay another year

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I just don’t think my mother wants me to stay with her for another year! She is sick of me already hahah

Hi another one year transfer here!! The thing is about us is that we finished all the classes we need for IGETC/major and reached the 90 unit min requirement. If you were to stay another year your’e not gonna have much to do. I also think for one years, we just want to get out lmao. Also, you won’t know forsure about Haas but IF it doesn’t work out, my advice is to just go to sb.

@npound hey! it is nice to see someone else going through my situation. I went to a CCC specifically for UCB, and bc I always strive for the hardest thing I just had to apply for like the hardest major lol.

I agree I just want to get out and experience that college lifestyle, but in the grand scheme of things, I’m wondering if another year at CC will benefit me more than just going to UCSB. It really is a tough situation. UCSB was super beautiful when I toured it, but all the research I’ve done on it has shown me that it is like the polar opposite of Cal
(Lots of parties, academics not the priority, ect…). It’s not that I hate parties I just don’t know how that will help me later in life haha.

haha ya i totally get what you mean about sb. yes they def have that reputation about being a party school but i have a lot of friends who also say in general most ppl are there to work/study hard. it also just depends on the friends you make. are there any other schools that you are willing to go to? theres still like ucsd, uci, ucd which are all great schools too.
i kinda also went to cc with one particular school in mind which is ucla but if i dont get in (hopefully i do lol) i would be content going somewhere else. I just think as one years, its not worth staying another full year esp bc we worked so hard to cut down one whole year of cc.

Hello @trashception . Like you, I am also a one year transfer. In my personal opinion, after all the hard work we put into taking heavy course loads and making sure we had specific units, we both deserve to be going to a UC. Even though UCB’s business school ranks as the top in the country I’m not sure it’s worth waiting a whole other year for. Like @npound said in his statement, with all the courses you took and your AP coverage, there probably isn’t a whole lot of school left for you to do. Even though you might be working on internships and other things to boost your resume, there is still no guarantee that you’ll get in next year. It’s not a comforting thing to think about, but it is the truth. The old saying of “One in the hand is worth Two in the bush” applies perfectly here. You’ve already been accepted to UCSB (the #5 public school in America) and you should be proud of yourself. We accomplished something that very few attempt, and even fewer succeed at.

All that I’m saying is that come Friday, should the worst happen don’t let it weigh down your academic journey.

So I’m not in the same situation as you guys. In fact, I’ve been at my CC for three years. I don’t know if I just don’t understand, but what’s the downside in spending two years at a CC? I know you guys worked hard to finish fast, but is there a point in “rushing” your academic journey, so to speak? Although there isn’t a guarantee you’ll get into UCB next year, why force yourself to like a school you aren’t sure about? I’m not trying to talk down on UCSB either, I think it’s wonderful and I’m probably going to be attending lol.

They are racing ??️

@ilovemydog2019 For me, going to CC was sort of a “redemption arc” if you will. During my senior year of high school I was denied by 5/7 UCs I applied to and waitlisted at Davis and Santa Cruz. I spent nearly two months checking their portals every day just to see if something would change. I became super moody and down all the time much to the dismay of all my friends and parents. Once June came around I found out that neither had taken me off the waitlist and I had no idea what to do. Originally I had thought to just go to a local CSU for two years and then transfer up to a UC, but then I realized that if I was going to be commuting everyday I might as well just go to a CC. I actually didn’t find out that I could transfer in one year using AP credit until about October, and after meeting with a transfer counselor she set me on the right path and I got in.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with going to a CC for two or even three years. I just felt like if there was a chance to sort of “speed up” the process using AP credit (earned from $90 tests) that I should take it.

I had to convince my mother that going to a CCC was a good idea at all. I am a first gen college student so all my mom knows is that CC is bad and 4-yrs are good haha. She was excited to kick me out already last year and is even antsier this year.

I think I would mostly do lots of Breath courses. I only have one completed and that is one of my biggest weaknesses. I knocked one out during the winter intersession but that’s about it, so I would focus on that mostly.

I completely agree with @DavisPls.This whole experience has been a redemption arc; I could not have said that better myself.

I really appreciate you guys explaining to me these things. It sounds like you’re all just absolutely ready to go into a 4 year, where I was not when I graduated high school, so that’s probably why I don’t really get it lol. Whatever you end up choosing, I’m sure that you’ll be very successful  good luck!!

@ilovemydog2019 thank you so much for your kind words. I am just gonna wait till Friday and update this thread when decisions come out.

[deleted] Thought you were someone else.

UCB has a 5% admit rate for Business transfers. First of all, there’s no shame in being rejected if that happens.

second, i your odds really wont improve significantly next year almost no matter what you do… They get so many highly qualified applicants that it is simply unlikely any individual will get - even with perfect grades, just the right courses and an internship to die for - there are just 100 or so seats to fill and there’s a large element of chance/luck whatever you want to all it in getting one. As a one year transfer, you probably have a more compelling story this year anyhow…

That said, there is NOTHING they teach at UCBs biz dept that you can’t learn elsewhere. If you don’t get in,head to Santa Barbara, but a Goucho’s sweatshirt and never look back. Make the most of your time there because it will pass in the blink of an eye.

I agree with the poster above. The transfer path for ultra-competitive majors is never straightforward, and chances are spending another year won’t change your outcome. I’d take what I can get, and focus my efforts on post-graduate education. Considering one year is 50% of an MBA, don’t forget the opportunity costs.

I got in Haas. I am so humbled. Thank you to everyone that gave me advice. I’m Berkeley bound!!!
