Is it worth it to visit colleges on a Saturday over the summer?

Hi everyone,

I'm a rising senior, and I would like to visit prospective colleges over the summer. I'm a high-achieving student, and my list of colleges include Yale, Princeton, MIT, Brown, Tufts, Amherst, Wesleyan...the only one I've been able to tour is Yale. This summer I want to visit as many as possible, but due to family and financial circumstances I can only do that on this one particular Saturday in August :( I checked different colleges' websites, and all of them offer information sessions and tours only on weekdays. If I can't visit this summer I probably will never be able to, and I know that Brown especially emphasizes demonstrated interest. So my question is, should I still visit my prospective schools even when there probably will be no one there to guide us? Anyone who's ever visited a school over the weekend in the summer, I would love to hear about your experience!

If you are visiting for the purpose of demonstrating interest, dont bother. An unofficial visit won’t count. If you are visiting to see the campus, then it could be somewhat helpful. Realistically, it’s tough to glean much useful information from this type of visit. You can demonstrate interest by contacting your AdCom. Besides, if you can only go on one Saturday, you’d be lucky to see more than two schools.

I’d never heard that demonstrated interest is important to Brown, and my student only went to an admissions presentation at her HS, wasn’t able to visit. She’s graduated now.

If you went on a weekend in the summer, it would be nice if you could connect with a student who could give you an informal tour and talk to you a bit. There are students who take classes in the summer and also students who do research. I’d try Ask a Brown Student, but not sure if they are replying in the summer.

Also you could try the admissions office to see if they know how you could contact a summer student for a chat while on campus. Also if you are interested in any particular departments, the departments will know who’s around and may ask on your behalf.
