is it worth taking precalc online if im not that great at math

Right now, I’m thinking of having my Junior year courseload look like this:

  1. AP Lang
  2. Hon Precalc
  3. AP Enviro
  4. Hon Us History (required)
  5. Hon Span III
  6. AP Stat
  7. Ap Psych

A LOT of kids at my school take AP calculus AB in their junior year. I’m wondering if it’s worth it to take Honors precalculus online (i am anticipating a busy summer but I’ll be home tho) and then taking AP calculus next year? Is it worth it considering I want to go into a STEM field? I currently have a 92 in Hon math III overall (lol) but i’ve been improving now that i have a tutor. Idk, do colleges care that much when you take calculus as long as you do take it at some point?

My D took an accelerated 6 wk summer course in Algebra 2 at a local high school to get ahead in math so she could take AP Calc AB junior year. She is now in AP Calc BC senior year. Although she got an A- in Algebra 2, I feel that she didn’t learn the concepts as well as she could have if she had a whole year to do practice problems and take tests and quizzes - I can see this when I sometimes help her with math. Junior year is also the year you want to get your best grades (for college apps) so I would say take Precalc and do really well in it. I know a student who took a summer math class just as a prep class and then took the class again during the following school year. Also, my daughter didn’t get an Honors or AP boost in her weighted GPA since the summer math class was only a regular designated class (thus hurting her weighted GPA).

If you’re not a math kid, take precalc over a school year, not an accelerated summer course.
Also, why are you doubling up in math with stats? If you’re not a math kid, one class per year is OK.

If you’re a STEM major, take calculus as a senior. Otherwise, do stats after precalc.

Precalc is mostly memorization. You are fine taking it online if you take good notes and follow along with the examples.

  1. AP Lang
  2. Hon Precalc
  3. AP Enviro
  4. Hon Us History (required)
  5. Hon Span III
  6. AP Stat
  7. Ap Psych

Why AP Stat? If you feel are not great at math, keep Hon Precalc and just take AP Calc next year (which is still more advanced than the average HS student).

Also why AP Enviro? What sciences have you taken? Bio, chem and Physics? Why not AP version of one of them?

i’ve taken bio and chem but AP science classes are 2 periods long and i just dont think i want to give up room in my schedule for them even tho i probably should

if I take AP Calc next year then I could definitely drop AP psych and stat in favor of an AP science class that’s 2 periods. That’s partly why i want to take AP Calc in the first place

I took pre-calc over summer after freshmen year, and I am 100% glad I did. I honestly kind of rushed through the course in a week and a half, but pre-calc (in my opinion) didn’t make a lot of difference in AP Calc for me. Even after just rushing through precalc in a very short amount of time, AP Calc is perfectly fine. I learned next to nothing in the summer pre-calc, but I’ve been able to maintain 97+ avg in AP Calc AB…
