Hi, everyone. I am now in a prestigious public university and obviously I am not happy here because of the academics. I don't know if it is worthwhile to give up a well- known university to go to Furman which is not well-known but perhaps with better education? Money is not a major problem. I may major in Accounting and Economics.

I am a little confused, if you are at a “prestigious public university”, why are you unhappy with the academics? Is it class size or something else? It would be helpful if we knew a little more about what makes you unhappy with your current school and what you are looking for.

Furman is a great LAC but it is very difficult to answer your question without a little more information.

Bobby CT brings up an excellent point-are you unhappy with class size, too many TA’s, not enough contact with professors? Furman is a great school, but you will want to consider the major your interested in pursuing at Furman, professor reputation, and in today’s economy, job placement for graduates. DS’s roommate is an accounting/econ. major and has worked incredibly hard ( as do most Furman students). OUr DD thought twice about transferring from Furman to Georgia Tech-take your time and weigh what you want to change as a result of transferring. One thing I see in transfer students is they believe the grass will be greener somewhere else, which is not always the case.

That said, this board had wonderful people ( both parents and students) who can give you excellent information on most aspects of Furman. Good luck in weighing your options and with your decision.

prestigious public:
these are the ones that come to mind in the south:
UVA
UNC
William and Mary
U of Florida
Georgia Tech

if you are not in one of these I would consider transferring possibly a good idea. like others have said depends on other circumstances

Why does your daughter want to transfer out??? Thank you!

I would agree with BobbyCT’s post-- your question is almost impossible to answer without more information about your circumstances and what you are looking for in a university.

I have a son at Furman and this university has a strong program in accounting…A few seniors finished early and 2 (early grads)have received full rides to Wake and Clemson for their Masters in accounting that my son knows of so far.I have many accountants in my family and they love Furman grades.Accounting is a major that it does not matter where you go to college as long as the college does not have a terrible academic reputation. What matters is how well you did in college. It is also a profession that has not been hurt terribly by the bad economey.I am not too familiar with Furman’s economics department but I do know Furman sent 4 students to APEC (Asian Pacifc Economic Counsel) in HI. Only 15 students in the country were choosen to go, 8 from the Ivys…I believe Furman has a full ride scholarship for transfer students that you may want to look into…My son choose Furman over much higher ranked colleges…The academics are excellent, the classes will be much smaller than at a large public university and the students are high achieving and very happy.

Thank you guys. I am now a student in william and mary. The main reason I want to transfer is because wm offers very few class that it is hard to register for class. And intro class is way too big.

I have S. will b a freshman going to Bama this fall he wants a large school. My D. will b going to Furman. We have only heard good things about Furman. Good luck.
