i know this school is not really competitive school. But I think this is best school that i can get into (1220 on SAT and 3.8 GPA, and not many activities)

I've been there many times and it looks like really nice college with GREAT food >.< and lots of party.

Is it a good school to go in to? Am i going to have satisfactory experience? Thanks in advance!

I'm from Virginia and I've never met anyone that didn't love JMU, and loads of my friends really want to go there. I hear the party scene is excellent, among the best (if not the best) in the state.

This may come as a surprise, but JMU is rapidly becoming one of the most competitive colleges in the state of Virginia. Virginia has a very strong in-state applicant pool to begin with. They're also looking for students with strong extracurriculars and leadership--JMU is not an easy admission by any stretch of the imagination. The party scene is one the police and University are working hard to limit. Good luck.

JMU is a very good school. It's filled with tons of above average but not exceptional students. Last year almost my school sent around 15 kids there (out of 300).

It ends up being a good mix--kids who couldn't quite make it into UVA or WM and kids for whom JMU was best they could do/first choice.

VA is lucky to have so many great state schools.

It compares well with VT. Both are fun schools with surprisingly good academics. VT has better sports though, and is stronger in Business (maybe other courses too, but I only know Business since that's what I'm going to major in)

My son attends JMU. Yes, the food is very good! He is enjoying himself and is very happy. He finds his classes to be challenging. There are a lot of instate students that attend who were waitlisted at UVA and then chose JMU (I am sure that some who are waitlisted at UVA chose W&M or VT). These students had 4.0+ in high school, but had low SAT scores for UVA (ie:1250-old).

My high school send about 30 kids each year to JMU. I guess on one hand, it is a safety school for those who didn't quite make it to UVA or William and Mary........this fact, along with out of state state student, have helped to boost it's average GPA and SAT scores. A girl in my high school was admitted with a 3.0 and a 990 on her SAT's. While JMU is getting more competitive, it's still not that difficult to get into instate. I know many kids that attend and every one of them love it. It is a major party school. The campus is large and spread out.................Even though Tech is large and a party school as well, it just seems to have a better rep than JMU. In fact for state schools, Mary Washington is definitely a more serious school, in my opinion. JMU is OK.

Just curious, the girl who had a 3.0 and a 990 (well below the median range), did she have a special talent, perhaps applying to the College of Visual and Performing Arts?

I'm going to apply to JMU. I'm international and was planning to apply under the early plan (early action) But when I researched their site, it said that it is harder to get in if one applies under the early action, is it right, or they just want to stop the big amount of students who want to apply early?

That is correct. It is more difficult to get in under early action. I believe their overall admit rate is around 67% (don't hold me to that exact number), but more like 50% under early action. They do defer you into the RD pool, if you are fit their profile, but are not strong enough to be admitted through early action.

Interesting link, with JMU ranked ahead of VT and UMD according to biz week. I knew Wharton and Ross were highly ranked, but the UVA rank at 2? Both UVA and JMU marketeers might want to get the word out re: these rankings...

dudedad, Believe me, JMU is very proud of that link. They used to have it on the first page of their website. They also were very happy to talk about those rankings being released soon at their accepted student's day, within the business school.

As a parent of a student there, I can tell you that they deserve their ranking. They manage to really make a large institution seem small and personalized. My son has received very good advising, has had little trouble in dropping one class and adding another, and has been well received by professors during office hours. His largest class has 50 students, although he can register for classes with 200 students if he wanted to be in a large lecture hall. He is in a class that has an instructor which he says is the best instructor he has ever had in any classroom.

Sometimes we kid around here in Virginia and say that JMU means "Just Missed UVA". But all kidding aside it is a wonderful school and we hope that our D gets accepted for next September.

how difficult of a school do you think james madison is to get into. Are most peopel that apply their top in their class or in the middle range. I have a 3.3 gpa and 24 act and was wondering if james madison was a possibility. I am middle of my class
