Do you believe that JMU is a very good school???
I am hopefully going to get accepted to UVA this spring and maybe William and Mary.
Where does JMU rank in VA....maybe behind UVA, William and Mary, and Mary Washington???

It would be ranked lower than UVA, and William and Mary, and then it depends upon your major in my opinion. For example, if you are interested in historical preservation UMW is it, for engineering look at VT, and for business look at JMU or VT. It also depends upon what you want. If you want a large school with football games on the weekend, don't choose UMW. If you want a smaller school with smaller classes then you might look at UMW rather than VT. If you want to be near Washington DC, you might look at GMU. If you want a campus that is not a suitcase school (meaning that a large number of students leave on weekends) don't look at GMU.

I would never ever ever ever ever ever go to virginia tech...i hate it ...
I am from C-Ville and would rather go to our local community college than go there....
I agree with you on the George Mason aspect...I heard that Mary Washington is the same way..I really don't want that.
I think it's gonna come down to UVA or William and Mary and JMU and Mary Washington for a safety school..I haven't visited there yet though I hear it's really nice

What did you hear that you don't want at MW? We did visit, and we liked it a lot.

it's a suitcase school...that's just wat i heard...
you did like it though??? i really want to get into UVA and I think I have a great chance, but I always want a backup

Oh, I did not realize that about UMW. I think that it is 30% OOS, so I wonder where those students go on weekends. Yes, we really did like it. When we looked there were a lot of perspective students looking at it who were from NY.

May I ask what you dislike so much about VT? We never visited.

I live in Charlottesville...and I have grown up on the UVA campus...we all hate virginia tech
it's a joke university..we call it a safety school and everyone knows that around here...
I went and visited once and I thought I was in jail....it's basically in the middle of nowhere

Well JMU is in Harrisonburg. It has all the conveniences that you want/need, but it is not LA, NYC, or Chicago either. I think that JMU's campus is beautiful. Lots of opportunity for outdoor activities (ie: camping, skiing, hiking).

I've been there 20 or more times and I like it a lot, but you're right about the location...that's what I really don't like and it's the only reason why I wouldn't go there...my mom graduated from there and my dad from UVA..
skiing is right next door, but I gotta be near a city

For the benefit of other cc readers, Harrisonburg is defined as a city. You will have public transit access to malls, movies, and a few restaurants, so the conveniences are there, but you are not likely to find the ballet or go to opera within this city (unless there is a performance at JMU). You can also find yourself within a few minutes of farm country. If one is interested in outdoor activities, one will find them. It is a gorgeous part of VA.

Is there public transit in Harrisonburg?? are you sure???
There aren't too many malls or movie theatres either! I live 30 minutes away..
For other readers: it IS the country!!!
Don't get me wrong...it's gorgeous, but by no means is it a CITY!!!!

LOL, yes, to me it looks like a town, but Harrisonburg is defined as a city. Yes, there are buses in Harrisonburg. This is how my son gets around. I agree with you about there being a limited number of malls and movies, but there is really just enough there for comfort. Believe me, we have visited enough LACs that were in the middle of nowhere; places where one is stuck without a car and one cannot go to simply buy bread, or get a haircut. JMU is absolutely nothing like that.

I know it's nothing like that, but it's just not for me.......
It's comfortable, but very country-like. It is def. just a safety school and would only go there if I don't get into UVA, UMW or William and Mary......

Pat, I wish you the best of luck with the admission decisions. I know that you know what JMU is like since you live a short distance away. I just explained a bit about the immediate area for other cc perspective students who have never visited this part of VA.

i know wat you mean........thanks!

Regarding UMW, it's a small state LAC that seems downright tiny. Not a lot going on either. When I toured with my D a few years ago there was an poster for a Guster concert...at U of Richmond.

at richmond? really??
I'm talkin about public schools not all the rich kids at U of R...
it costs 50 grand a year when there are 3 or 4 better public schools in the state of virginia

Here is how it goes

William and Mary
UVA (OK, no flack, I just happen to go to William and Mary!!)

Virginia Tech
JMU
Mary Washington

The list above is correct based upon average accepted Northern Virginian students' stats, except UVA and William and Mary are switched =P

if you were to add George Mason and University of Richmond into the list (since someone in the tread mentioned them), it'd go

UVA
University of Richmond
William and Mary
Virginia Tech
JMU
Mary Washington
George Mason

again this is JUST based upon stats of accepted Northern Virginian students.

W&M has higher test scores and lower admit rate than UVirginia.

Washington & Lee
William & Mary
UVirginia
URichmond
Va Tech
Mary Washington
James Madison
