Is John Hopkins a good engineering school? Especially for Mechanical Engineering. Is it Purdue level? Is it in the top 10 Mechanical Engineering schools?
The short answer is yes. But in engineering a top state school, like Purdue, can be just as good for usually less money.
It’s JOHNS Hopkins (its one of our pet peeves)
It’s very strong in bioengineering and chemical/bio molecular engineering top of the nation!!
How about Mechanical Engineering. Where does it rank?
If you are looking for ranks, go to ranking sites! Hopkins is highly rated across nearly all types of engineering.
32 on this list
12 here
And many other pages you can use Google to find. Who cares about rankings? If a school is ABET-accredited, it’s good in engineering.
@bodangles Is is ABET accredited?
@billybobby54 the BME, ChemBE, CivE, CE, CS, EE, Engineering Mechanics, Environmental E, Materials Science, and MechE programs at Hopkins are ABET accredited

Additional question, how does the engineering department as a whole rank against similar privates such as Rice
Hopkins is #21 and Rice is #31 according to the grad school rankings. They should translate reasonably well to undergrad. But at this level focusing on rankings is not very helpful. After a certain point the rankings become pretty subjective.
Hopkins engineering is far better than Rice’s based on all rankings. Rice outside of BME is just ok.
