im applying ed to vassar and i just wanted to know if kenyon was anything like vassar. especially in relation to sociality. if so, i would like to add it to my application list.

I didn't look at Kenyon when I was applying to schools, so really can't say much about it. Based on the little I do know, however, there are some similarities. One is the atmosphere... I believe both schools have reputations as being on the liberal end of the spectrum, although Vassar is a bit more so. Kenyon, like Vassar, is also known particularly for some of its humanities programs (English and Creative Writing in particular).

Now for some differences... Kenyon is about 800 students smaller than Vassar and is in what I believe to be a very rural area. Based on this information, I would venture a guess that the campus feels a lot smaller and even more intimate than the Vassar campus. Lastly, Kenyon has a rather active fraternity-sorority component to its social scene, which Vassar lacks.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful... hopefully some other CC people can give their input.

Generalizations are very tricky but I think Kenyon would be considered quite a bit more of a tradtional school than Vassar. Both are great schools but the social life is, in theory, different. I would associate Kenyon with let us say Colgate.

Vassar would would be considered more similar to Oberlin or Wesleyan.

"I would associate Kenyon with let us say Colgate."

I don't attend either school, but that seems like a stretch. Colgate has a major preppy, athletic reputation goin' on. Kenyon and Vassar aren't like that at all, I think.

if we're talking generalizations...

Kenyon students are incredibly down to earth, and NOT preppy.
Vassar students are artsy and more "unique."

both schools are pretty sweet.

yeah...if kenyon were like colgate i would NOT apply.
but im getting very diverse answers.
im definitely not a fan of the idea of greek life.
so i dont know how that would work out.

Having visited both with my daughter last year, I'd say that the atmosphere at Kenyon had a less pretentious feel to it, though I didn't find Vassar to be overly pretentious (my daughter preferred Kenyon to Vassar for this reason).
I know there are frats at Kenyon, but I understand they're not of the usual sort. I read somewhere that the frat boys are poets.

Yes, maybe Colgate was not a good one perhaps Bates, Middlebury, and Hamilton then? Kenyon has frats which is a big difference though (Wesleyan has some frats as well) obviously they are not the same as at other schools with frats.

i must say, i was under the impression that kenyon was not that preppy. however, when i visited i saw too many polo shirts for my liking! i think that kenyon is probably best described as middle of the road maybe leaning toward the preppy side, if colgate is the preppy end and a place like vassar is the more liberal/hippie/hipster end.
i'd say that kenyon is probably a little more down to earth than hamilton, more similar-ish to bates
since it's in the mid-west, it's bound to have less of the new england-y prep thing going on
