Is Khan Academy a good source for practicing for the SAT?

Grade 10 (canadian) here, I am planning on taking the SAT soon. Is Khan Academy a good source to prep from or should I use other sources as well? If so, what are those sources?

Yes, my daughter said it is good. Are you able to take an in-person class or work with a teacher to focus on areas when you need to improve or practice? My son went to Kaplan and my daughter went to Test Masters. My son was not the type to keep up with the self study.

It worked well for my son. They have 8 “full-blown” tests and it is my understanding that 5-8 are actual ones that were given previously. Be sure to do one or two of those in one sitting (including if you finish early, sitting there and just rechecking your work) which takes about 3-4 hours. Good luck!

It worked well with my 10th grader. She spent about 2 hours a day on khan academy for 3 weeks in August and scored 1560.

Khan academy is a great resource to get a solid foundation in the basic concepts especially in Math. For other other portions, I recommend the SAT book of official tests.

@NYTXCA She only used Khan Academy for preparing?

I’m not their biggest fan.

I tend to find the explanations, at least in math, way too convoluted. Sol Khan is a brilliant man, but he’s not a math teacher. He tends to take the textbook approach, explaining each and every nuance, to the point where he makes simple concepts seem way too complicated.

They get the job done, but I’m not always sure they make it easy. I think time on your own with a test prep book may be the better way to go for a lot of kids.

That, and the book “Up your Score, the Insiders Guide to the SAT.” I love that book. It’s full of strategies, not problems.

This is one of those YMMV-issues. My son used only Kahn and the CB practice exams and ended up with a 740 on the SAT-Math which is better than what we were expecting for him (he’s not a STEM kid). His verbal was practically perfect but for him that made sense. What helped on the math was paying meticulous attention to the stuff he was missing so that he’d improve his score the next time. He was also very ambitious and determined to do well (so the attitude was there - whether that helped or not I can’t say). Had he scored lower, he probably would have done what @bjkmom is advising and invested in a decent math prep book for the re-test.

I’d say try Kahn and see if it helps you on the CB practice tests but also invest in a decent prep book if you aren’t making good progress. Up Your Score sounds like a good recommendation.

@atwist yes. She used Khan academy only.
