“FOIL” is my favorite pet peeve in math education. If this is how you explain it, how would kids multiply two trinomials?
I actually say “FOIL” but teach “double distributive” when it’s a pair of binomials: first distribute the first term, then the next, and so on.
But “FOIL” is a whole lot easier to say, and they know what I mean… no need for the convoluted explanation they’re getting on Khan Academy. (I’m reviewing with SAT prep, not teaching.)
And, on the SAT, it’s very frequently a pair of binomials. So FOIL is absolutely appropriate.
I’m not a huge fan of Khan Academy for SAT prep. The explanations aren’t great and I find that the questions are too hard, or simply not relevant to the test itself. I answer about 10 questions daily but I’ve found more benefits and a more accurate representation of the SAT in studying based on the official practice tests.
