Is Mich the school for me?

I don’t think anyone can answer this, but maybe you can help me out a little. I got into Rutgers-honors (I live instate so it wouldn’t be very expensive), Bu honors with half tuition scholarship, Brandeis and UMich! I like UMich and Brandeis the best. My parents like Umich and BU. Brandeis and Mich would be extremely expensive for me, but my parents might help pay for part of it and then help me pay off some of the debt. Here’s what I do know…

I want to go to a school where the academics are really important to people. I’m no genius, but I’m a serious student who works hard and I want to be around other people like that.

I want to go to a respected school (but really being around other good students is more important then the prestige for me). I’m also pretty sure I want to go to some graduate/law school so I want to go to a college that will prepare me well and help me get in.

I’d really like to get to know a few profs and get to work with them. I’m okay with having to approach them myself, but is it possible?

I’m a shy person, but I’m friendly. I like to think of myself as a geek, but I don’t think I’m a boring person. I work for a national teen health magazine that promotes comprehensive sex education and I’m really involved with being Jewish (but more in the cultural aspect than the religious).

Idk what i want to study yet. I’m interested in law, neuroscience, entertainment industry and writing. So yeah- i’m pretty undecided. My parensts are also worried to send me off to college being undecided. They would rather me go to a cheaper school and then go to an expensive grad school when I’m sure of what I want to do.

I guess I want to go to the best school I get into and for me that means best students, variety of courses, profs, and oppertunities in terms of grad school and future jobs. I applied to honors and am still waiting for that. I’ve heard from some that I shouldn’t do it bc it will lower my gpa and has no real advantage. I like the idea though of living with other honors students and having those classes. Who knows if I’ll even get in though.

So any thoughts/advice/info would be very appreciated! If you read through this entire thing thank you so much.

First of all, being in the honors college should not lower your GPA. Professors take student quality into consideration and the curve in Honors classes tends to be more reasonable.

Cost is something you must seriously consider. With half tuition, BU would be cheaper than Brandeis or Michigan. I think BU would end up costing you $30,000 vs Michigan's $42,000. However, your parents seem not to mind the cost difference, so they can probably help you.

You have a tough decision, but from what you saiy, it seems to think Michigan and Brandeis would be best for you. Did you get to visit all three schools? You should definitely visit and see if one of them stands out.

being in honors means you have to take Great Books >.<

I visited all three. Mich last week and BU and Brandeis a year ago. I wasn't crazy about BU when I went, I liked how Brandeis looked, but I didn't like what some of the students had to say( a few talked about not working very hard or caring about academics). I liked Mich, but I wouldn't say that I was madly in love with it. I really liked the honors program there, but I don't think i got in.

michigan's boring.

If finances aren't going to be a big problem, I would say go for Michigan.
