UM or BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY???

I'm deciding between UM and Brandeis. Here are my list of pros and cons:
PLEASE ADD!!!!!!!!!!!!! TELL ME WHAT U THINK I SHOULD DO!!!

UM Pros:
Art school
College town/city feeling
Very diverse
Higher ranked than Brandeis

UM Cons:
Far away (I live in NYC)
Very big
Too Social (too many parties, too many frats etc.)
Less academics to take because going to art school

Brandeis Pros:
Close to home
Small
Pretty campus
I will be very comfortable- because im Jewish and it's 50% Jewish
More academic leway- I won't be going to an art school- just majoring in art

Brandeis Cons:
More academic classes- potentially harder
Doesn't have a city feeling- Boston is 20 min. away
I want to go to an art school
Too Jewish want to meet diverse people

WHAT SHOULD I DO????? ****I'm leaning toward UM right now...

Any financial considerations?

I don't think the "too social" should be a factor. How social a school is ultimately depends on you.

Hi, I was between the same two schools and decided on Umich today. I had a lot of the same factors, size, too social, jewish, etc. For me the big thing was the Umich honors program and for you it seems like the art school. Umich does have an active Hillel house and a good number of Jews. Are you considering doing one of the rc's for art- (that would make it smaller)? Hope this helps a little. I feel your pain on deciding, but both are great schools! You can pm me if you want to talk about it more lol. (I'm from east coast too-NJ)

Emily

doesnt make a difference

Michigan isn't exactly a party school...
Walking around campus a couple of weekends ago, I kind of laughed at myself realizing that there were more people in the library than on the streets.

I feel like I might be out of place if I'm not as social ("partyer") as everyone else. And there might not be anything else to do besides party all night.

Really? That's not what I heard.

Michigan has a pretty large Jewish population. And Michigan is certainly not a party school, although many people do like to blow off some steam on weekends. There are a plethora of weekend activities that do not include partying

I wouldn't say Brandeis is a more difficult school either. Michigan is a very challenging school.

I recommend you join the RC. It's a good option for people who don't party much and are in tune with their artsy side. Plus, East Quad is a great location and the dorms are fairly nice.

I haven't been to a party or consumed any alcohol all year and I don't feel like my social life is lacking even though I joke about being a loser sometimes. I remember comparing college stories with my friends from home about a month into this year. One of them at MIT felt like she could only either stay in her room or go out to frat parties...which isn't her scene at all ("I'm so...private-schooled..."). There weren't nearly options as to what to do on a Friday night as you would probably find at Michigan. It's not like Furman or Vanderbilt, where you find parties everywhere. And Michigan definitely doesn't compare to the other schools in the Big Ten when it comes to partying.

thank you good point!

thats not what iv'e heard- iv'e heard that mich is a party school.

There's a difference between what you heard, and the truth :)

U-M is like any other school, there are going to be parties on there, but compared to some of the real party schools, Michigan doesn't compare.

You have to kind of define what your definition of a party school actually is too..

michigan definately isn't a party school. There are parties, of course, but there are many students who don't do that scene -- so its not like you'll feel left out or anything. There are plenty of other things to do on campus.

I have friends who are engineers at UM and it isn't a party school. I have friends that are in kiniseology(sp?) at UM and it is a party school.

UM has parties, especially in the frat. scene, but it has a bit more seperation from between the party-school part and the academic part than most schools. However, UM had more couch fires(real police stat) than MSU last year, so they can get pretty crazy.

It seems like I am going back and forth, I guess the best way I could put it is: There is a very large party scene at UM(very large). It is not completely intertwined with the school, so it seems at least less pervasive.

saying that UM is a party school is to subjective to provide a valid argument.

dude, definitely u-mich

"I feel like I might be out of place if I’m not as social (“partyer”) as everyone else. And there might not be anything else to do besides party all night. "

That’s complete crap, just so you know. Not everyone here even likes going to parties. I have been here a semester, been having a blast, and have not even SEEN a party, much less gone to one.

u might like the parties. lol, pretty much everybody at michigan was a nerd in high school. It might seem like there’s tons of parties, because it’s a big school, the party-people are just more visible, there are plenty of people doing other things at that time as well.

Ahh, folks, the opening post of this thread is 2 1/2 years old, chances are quite good that the OP has made his/her decision by now.
