I'm confused. Is the video making fun of the middlebury stereotypes or is it trying to show us how cool midd is ?

both…

a follow-up question. . .are you laughing at them or with them? or, at what point does trying to be cool, or clever, make you neither? they, clearly, had fun making it – kudos!

It’s satire based partly on stereotypes. You’re meant to laugh along with it. I promise you that kids at Middlebury don’t attend parties carrying wads of cash.

That’s very vague. It’s either to promote the college or make fun of the stereotypes. If they’re making un of the stereotypes its sad coz that would be a reason NOT to choose middlebury if they are saying that you SHOULD choose midd based on the video then its not satire… :/

Read Arcadia’s post again… yes, it is partly based on stereotypes (which is what makes it humorous and the advice to never take yourself too seriously), however, no one is defined by a stereotype in whole. I think there are clearly different kinds of people, but to me it seems that all kinds of kids will find a home at Midd and what has been made clear from my son is that while he has a small group of close friends, he doesn’t only do certain things or hang with the same larger group to do everything. And frankly, I don’t think the video ever says to this is why you should come to Midd. Other people say, this is why THEY chose Mid and others have commented that it reflects any NESCAC school or any NE school. But if you read the comments on YouTube, it just seems that everyone sees something they can relate to… even if they don’t like the thing (few and far between). Truth is… I graduated college in 1982 and I can see that the more things change, the more they stay the same when it comes to college. This was not sponsored by the school in any way. Nor was it endorsed by it. So if there is a real reason here to pick Midd, it’s that you are allowed the freedom where you can choose to be who you want, express yourself the way you want and make your life what you want. Seems to me that every school has their groups - much the same in fact as Midd… but I really like that these students can see this about themselves and yet, not take themselves so seriously that they can’t have some fun with it as well. Bottom line, the majority seem to have taken it in the spirit in which it was offered… fun.
