Is Montana State University a good school ?

I recently got an email about them for applying through their Leadership edge program (?). I’m planning on being a STEM major/ pre-med track. I ideally want to go to a LAC in california but financial aid is definitely a huge factor because I’m planning on doing more than 4 years of school & don’t want to be in debt. Do they offer good merit based scholarships/financial aid ? Are there STEM programs good/decent ?

any feedback about the school ?
thanks

Yes, they’re excellent for STEM and have good merit scholarships starting at act 28 (32+ for big awards).
What are your stats?
If you have strong stats, think if Oxy and the Claremonts, plus Whitman, Lewis& Clark, UPugetSound. Run the NPC (net price calculator) for each college. Fill out the Request info form for those that are affordable.

Yes, they are a solid school. But keep in mind that if you plan to go on for a PhD, you are probably only going to want to do that if the PhD is funded – the school pays YOU to TA and research during the years you work on your coursework, research, and thesis. They don’t pay a lot, but at a decent school it is a wage you can live on. That said, very good grades and getting some research experience at MSU would position you for grad school admissions.

MSU participates in WUE (get 1.5x resident tuition) and may also have WUE-related competitive scholarships.

I would look at the financials…if you are not a Montana resident also look at your State U…
If the engineering school is ABET accredited then it will be good.
Do you like winter?
Go ahead and apply and then you can see how the financials work out for you with any scholarships you get.

How hard is it to get in state tuition? We are from Texas. My daughter wants to attne MSU. She will work while in college and probably stay there for the holidays (except Christmas) and summers. Could she apply for in state tuition at a certain point?

The norm is that in-state tuition depends on where parents live (and pay taxes).
Some states, like Missouri and Utah, make it possible for a student to apply for in-state tuition if they live in the state year round;it also typically requires registering to vote as well as registering a car. Those are known to be especially generous.
You can ask Montana but don’t expect much. The main points of bringing Oos students are geographic diversity (so the campus can represent some of what the country is, not just a little corner of it - for that purpose, Montana State is part of WUE) and Oos tuition (to offset budget cuts).
