is my GPA too low for my dream school (UNC Chapel Hill)?

My dream school is UNC Chapel Hill, and luckily, I’m in-state. I can find NO info on GPA for UNC, except that it states that their average GPA is a 4.59 or something like that. It’s kinda hard to interpret this since schools weight GPA’s differently. I have a 3.67 unweighted and a 4.50 weighted GPA at my high school, which is well known throughout the state for being notoriously hard and also being ranked #1 in NC on USNWR. I’m around the top 15-20% of my class.

I have a 32 ACT score, which I am retaking in order to get a 34 or higher (studying my tail off)

my EC’s are: captain of two time state championship winning swim/dive team, started charity at school that works with/raises money for UNC hospitals and St. Jude hospital, NHS, cross country (likely captain next season), ambassador for my high school, BETA club, head dive coach at local pool where I have to work with a lot of small children and teach them to dive, and will be working as a lifeguard this summer along with the coaching job.

I’m also spending a lot of time crafting my essays over the summer and my teacher rec’s should be good.

I’m sorry I ask about my GPA a lot on here and probably sound like a broken record, but I’m very anxious about getting into Chapel Hill and want to get some outside input about this school specifically. My school does not use Naviance so I don’t know what GPA other kids had who got in. Please help me out, thanks! I can chance you back if you want.

Seems like your chillin.

Your extracurriculars are awesome and show that you’re a “well-rounded” student. While your GPA is a little low for Chapel Hill, being an in-state applicant is TREMENDOUSLY helpful. UNC is notoriously difficult to get into because they only accept about 10% of out of state applicants. Your high weighted GPA shows that your curriculum was most likely rigorous, but it’s hard to tell because every school is different. I don’t have specific numbers for in-state applicants, but I’d think that UNC would want a 3.6-3.8 GPA. A 33 on the ACT is already in the 75th percentile for all applicants, so your score is already well above average, especially for the smaller pool of in-state applicants. If you do end up retaking the ACT and score higher, it will most likely compensate for your lower GPA. With all of this considered, I think your chances are quite fair. Good luck!

If you were oos, you would have a chance but it t would be a reach. But your instate so I think you have a great shot!
