Is my graphic design portfolio okay?

I'm a high school student applying to an art school here in California for graphic design. I really like graphic design and art but I find it hard to work on projects because my school doesn't have a lot of art classes and I can't afford to pay for art classes at other places so I have been mostly self taught. The application deadline isn't until February 1st so I do have some time to add and change things to my portfolio. I'm not exactly sure what art schools are looking for and it's really stressing me out. I feel like art schools only want people that are already like Pablo Picasso so I'm not sure if I have a shot :/ But I'm trying to remain hopefully since the admissions rate is 82-90%. I left a link to what I think are the best graphic design pieces that I made and I would love to get any feedback that I can :)

What school is this? What is the Cost of Attendance? Is this a ‘for-profit’ school with a low graduation rate?

@Madison85 It’s for California College of the Arts. It’s a non-profit private school and it’s $58,142 a year. I’m not sure what the graduation rate is though but I know it’s one of the top art schools in California and the campus is very small which I like a lot.

25stormy, check out this website: <a href=“AICAD (The Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design) - SlideRoom”>AICAD (The Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design) - SlideRoom. You can get a portfolio review now, which will give you time to act on the feedback you receive. CCA is an AICAD member, although I am not 100% sure they participate in the portfolio review (you will find out when you create a login and enter the site) - even if CCA is not reviewing, you will be able to get great feedback from other schools.

I am a noob in graphic design, but I can give some pointers for improvement.

-On the travel brochure, the circles should have a more uniform border color. Also, some some of the text in the Testimonials Page is hard to read, so maybe try a shadow or black border so the text doesn’t blend into the background.

-The Adventure Time informative poster is interesting. However three things, I feel, are detrimental. First, I think the bullet point text for Jake and Finn should be the same size, and the peppermint bullets should be more left aligned. Secondly, I feel the graph should be more relevant. Samurai Jack and the Powerpuff Girls aren’t on Cartoon Network anymore, and I imagine there’s more people watching TV these days. Maybe compare Adventure Time to Teen Titans Go or Regular Show, as it’s more even ground then. Third, I think the About section should be less spaced. It’s centered, but there is a lot of gaps in the text that kinda distract the eye.

-I think for the movie poster and Words Hurt poster in particular, if it’s a digital submission where you get to elaborate on your art, explain their context. Namely, why you composed them in such a manner, the color schemes, etc.

Overall, you have very good foundation for your designs, you just need more polishing and tweaking.

I’ll PM you a graphic designer’s blog, Karen Kavett’s, because I like her work and maybe she’s more explanatory than me in regards to graphic design.

Thank you everyone for the comments, I really appreciate them!

You will probably need 10-15 pieces and possibly a sketchbook to show. Keep that in mind.

I can’t really comment on graphic design. I will say to keep pushing yourself creatively to go beyond where you are now. To kind of get past structure and limits and just blow it out.
