My parents have complained that my handwriting is difficult to read, which would certainly have a very negative impact on my essay grade (for the SAT).

Here's a sample. Please disregard the actual content, which was totally random. What do you guys think?

That’s totally fine, perfectly legible. If my handwriting, which looks like calligraphy mixed with hieroglyphics, is fine then I don’t think your handwriting will be a problem.

I believe for the essay on the SAT, it might be better to just focus on the content than the handwriting. I took the SAT and scored an 11 on the essay with the worst handwriting you’d ever see. I was extremely surprised when I saw my digital copy as I could barely read it haha
So no your handwriting will not effect your essay score. Focus on writing the essay with the time given as it will go by in a flash

Both of your’s are infinitely better than mine. I am going to feel bad for the ACT readers, and already feel bad for the AP readers, for having to read my chicken scratch. I was actually told by my AP Lang teacher that they may not grade mine, because of potential illegibility. Luckily, the ACT is only one essay, so I should be able to write semi-decently for one.

Mapletree7: Your handwriting is beautiful. It’s legibility is so-so. No one can predict what the College Board will do, I suspect your written response might get bumped to a supervisor who will take the time to read/decipher if necessary. In rare instances the CB will outright give a 0 because they cannot read the student’s penmanship, which is why your parents are concerned about yours. I do not think yours qualifies as such - though, again, I cannot predict with certainty what they’ll do. If you want to be safe, try loosening up your hold on the pen and allow a little more space between the letters within each word. (It is lovely. …Did you attend Montessori early on?)

Thank you for all the compliments, everyone! I really appreciate it! Nice, Harrovian, very interesting.

And Brielle11 and Debater1996, I’m sure you’re just being overly pessimistic with yourselves.

You’re right, of course. But the graders typically spend ~2 minutes per essay, according to my prep books. If my handwriting is illegible, it’s possible that they’d give up trying to read it after a few minutes and give me a zero, or a one, or something similar.

I’ll try that, thanks. The sample here was done in a bit of a hurry, so perhaps I can try that while writing slowly.

I don’t believe I’ve even heard of Montessori, let alone attending it. A Google search revealed that it’s both a school and a type of education. What are you referring to here? I’m curious.

Yes - my feedback is based on SAT Reader policies and procedures. Legibility is somewhat questionable by their standards (not mine), they’d likely kick your response to a supervisor, I’d predict s/he would grade it. They would not likely deem your writing as illegible and give it a zero - I’ve seen what qualifies for that, and yours does not look it. My feedback is based on many years of exposure to their p&p. However! If you want full credit for your brilliance, make sure others can read it ;)

re. montessori - lol
It’s a great school of thought and practice, designed by Maria Montessori, M.D. Kids that complete the AMI Montessori “experience” usually have beautiful loopty-loos, like yours.

Thanks for sharing your question. I hope this helps.
