Is my list of schools good? I want recommendations and/or chances plz.

Hiii, I'm working on my final list of schools! What better way to decide my future than based upon the opinions of strangers?

I've got nine, but I think it's too top-heavy (although I have a few safeties -- I guess I'm just looking for more "match" schools that aren't "reaches," too!)... but I don't want to apply to more than 12 schools at the most. I might keep it at these nine, depending on what people's opinions of my chances are. I'm interested in cognitive neuroscience and I'd prefer to stay on the east coast, although I'm willing to venture a little west, as you'll see on my list.

So far, I know that I want to apply to:

Brown
Case Western Reserve/b
**Johns Hopkins
MIT
Northwestern
Princeton
(XD 'cause I won their book award and the alumni were like, "we can write you rec letters :)" so why not?)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute/b
**University of Delaware/b
**Wellesley

First, I'll give you my stats and stuff (sorry this is so long!), then I'll give you a list of other schools I'm looking into. (I have this Word document in which I'm recording basic things about all of the schools: distance from home, neuroscience program, application process, middle 50% SAT scores, etc.) I want you guys to tell me if my list is good (I'm fine if you just say "yeah your list looks good; this thread is pointless"), and if it's too top-heavy or I'm missing a school that you think would be GREAT for me, suggest away!

STATISTICS

I don't even have any "leadership positions" of yet, although a few have been offered to me for next year. Oh well... my ECs are things that *I
enjoy, even if they don't look good. I just hope that adcoms can see that even though all I do is join clubs, they're in areas of interest; I spend my extracurricular time exploring my passions.

[] Honor Roll lawl
[] National Merit commended, expecting NMSF (score is well above MD cutoff)[/ul]
I guess that's it. Oh, here's a list of other schools that I'm thinking about, based on what I've seen about their neuroscience programs and stuff:

Amherst
BU
Columbia
Cornell
Dartmouth
Emory
NYU
Ohio Wesleyan
Oberlin
Swarthmore
UChicago
UPenn
URochester
Vanderbilt
WashU

Any suggestions/what do you think of my list so far? Ew, this thread is so long. Sorry!

well, it looks like you're in a really good position for college. you definitely seem like a well-rounded student. what I take from reading your post is that you like art, computers and this cognitive neuroscience stuff. I don't know anything about what that cognitive neuroscience is but it sounds a little challenging for the likes of me! but it seems like you'll be up to it!
anyway...
I think your college list is very solid. if those are the schools you really like, then you should be all set. that's a very healthy number of schools to apply to...I know a lot of people at this site like to push it into the teens, but it looks you're taking a tough course load next year. I'm not suggesting you're not up to the task, but you're sure to get into a handful if not most of the schools on the existing list, and you can only end up attending one school (at a time) so why go through all the extra trouble?

so good luck! make those applications sparkle! haha

(oh yeah, btw, I wouldn't worry about that Math SAT II score...you have clearly and excellent Math SAT I score to back it up. sure it could be higher, but don't let it distract you or anything.)

Thank you very much! I'm glad you think my list is good! I'm just really OCD and indecisive, so I'm a little bit worried about being thorough... like, what if I discover a school that I love after the application process and regret not applying? (Such are the insecurities of an obsessive-compulsive worrier... XP) Then again, every school on my final list is one at which I'd be very happy... so I can't imagine having too many regrets.

Students interested in Oberlin, Swarthmore and UChicago are sometimes interested in Carleton, Grinnell and Reed. All are especially academic; many grads earn advance degrees (e.g., a PhD in neuroscience :) ).

You say "I spend my extracurricular time exploring my passions." What are they?

See "interests/hobbies" -- I really like art, computer and math stuff, English-y stuff, neuroscience, and metal. >:]

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll add them to my long to-be-considered list! :D

Bump... do I need anything else on my list? I'm gonna meet with my GC tomorrow to talk to her about writing my recs, but I dunno if she's gonna help me with my list or just take mine for granted. So I want to be pretty sure of my list, just to be safe!

Last night I had a dream about crying because I didn't get into one of the schools on my list. Which wouldn't happen IRL, for the record. -___- I spend too much time on CC.

If I were you I would add a couple more schools right after HYP- places like Amherst, Dartmouth, and Penn.

You and I are very similar. Metal-loving future neuroscientists. =P
Only weakness I see is that you dont really seem TOO focused EC-wise, but you obviously know that. Colleges might doubt how genuine your interest in neuroscience is- after all, you haven't done too much with it. Regardless, good luck and I'm sure you'll go far.

What sorts of texts do you read regarding neuroscience?

I've read some Ramachandran (Phantoms in the Brain got me into neuroscience!), Sacks, Doidge's The Brain That Changes Itself, and I have a Luria book I've yet to read. Someone recently sent me this 1320-page PDF called 'Principles of Neural Science,' which I've read a bit of sporadically.

I saw your thread about your ECs, and wow, you've done a lot with neuroscience! It's awesome how much experience you already have in the field! I regret becoming interested so late in my high school career, but I hope that I can make up for lost time next year in my internship and... hey.. in my career. :]

So, what are your favorite bands? XD

Got my AP scores!

5s in Calc AB, English Language, and World History
4 in Computer Science AB

Lalalaaa

Isn't Greater Baltimore an oxymoron?

But I digress.

You probably should retake the SAT. The 790 in writing is holding you back...

Seriously, I don't think you mention the summer programs on your apps, though. I don't think they really gain you anything other than the implication your family is well-endowed financially.

Yeah, I know that they're not selective programs or anything. But through my ECs, I want to show that I enjoy learning for the sake of learning. And the Brown one is even in my area of study, neuroscience.

Okay. As long as you are using them for a purpose other than a longer list, then that is a good idea. It would obviously make sense to tie them into some essay.

Definitely! And especially for UDel and Brown, I'd like to mention that I chose to spend my precious summer time studying at their institutions! : ]

Lalala, evaluate my chances? I'm becoming increasingly paranoid that I'm overestimating my ability... not that I'd mind ending up at a "safety" school, but I'd feel ridiculous for having tried if I didn't get into any of the others...

Just got back from Summer@Brown -- it was great and I learned a lotttt about neuroscience. I love the Brown atmosphere (yeah, yeah, summer isn't representative of what it's really like, blah blah blah, but it's some basis for judgment imo!)

I also went to a Hopkins info session and tour today and fell in LOVE with the campus. It's soooo beautiful!! And based on the info session, the atmosphere really, really appeals to me.

So, my top three choices remain Brown, MIT, and JHU, in no particular order. My list of nine is still the same -- I've received great suggestions and looked into them, but I always come back to these nine. (I'm an indecisive person, so when I make a decision, I have trouble modifying it. XP)

Sooo would anyone like to tell me if they think I've got a shot? >__>

One more thing -- I've written drafts of some essays. My CommonApp essay is about my interest in neuroscience, and I've written an additional essay about death metal, a personal interest of mine, but I dunno how many schools will have prompts to which that essay would be an appropriate response. And I'm going to write about my internship for my EC essay... after, you know, I actually get a placement. XD

CAN I PLEASE READ YOUR ESSAYS?!?!?!? I'm class of 2010. But seriously. Death metal. Neuroscience. Please...we were meant to be friends. =D

Hahahha, definitely! I'll PM you in a sec. And I agree. (:

And I'm still jealous of your neuroscience experience (not in an "omg this will make you such a good candidate" way, but in an "omg you've done cool stuff" way.)

ok so im tired and its late and i didnt read the entire thing honestly, but I checked out your scores and grades and some activities. I don't know too much about your college list, but I know brown is a great school. I live in the area actually, and my school is onyl a few miles from Brown, and you might like the campus a lot if you have not visited. I think it is really pretty and I just love the atmosphere. Plus, Providence is a great place to live. I love Rhode Island, even if we are the smallest state, there's so much to do here! I would actually with your SATs and GPA and other scores apply to more ivies =). Harvard is beautiful, I visited with friends just for fun. And trust me If I had the grades and scores I would be there in a heartbeat because the academics and all of their programs are amazing. I don't know if they have your particular major, but that is an excellent school. Middlebury is pretty good too. But your list seems pretty amazing. ANd good luck with MIT! If you can pull your math II up to like, and 800 you can probably get in no doubt because of your strong academics! But I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you! I've visited Harvard and it is an exciting, pretty campus. But as far as the Ivies besides Brown, my favorite one, I decided to choose between H & P because I figured it would be a waste of application fees to try for more than one, lol. Princeton seemed the logical choice 'cause I got an award from them and I really got a good vibe from the school from talking to some of the members of its alumni committee. And I've got a lot of schools in the Cambridge area (well, two), so I didn't have any overwhelming reason to apply to Harvard. I do hear good things about their neuro program, though. Maybe I'll look there for grad... :]
