Is my list of schools good? I want recommendations and/or chances plz.

Third page nooo!

You seem very well rounded in terms of academics (GPA is a wow @.@) but your ECs are literally a laundry list. all those clubs you have not been an officer in...which is really bad =/

Yeah, I know. :[ I want to convey that I'm in these clubs because they're in my areas of interest. I made a resume that explains what exactly I've done through each organization, so schools don't think that I just show up at meetings so I can write down the club names, haha. :/

With your states, I'd say that UDel is a safety and you might even be competitive for significant merit. Interesting that UD is the sole public on your list, rather than UMDCP.

If you really like your safeties, the short list is balanced. But unless you'd be perfectly happy to attend Case, Rensselaer, or UD, you might consider adding one more solid match school since JHU, Northwestern, and Wellesley are all semi-reaches.

Yeah, I know I'd be happy at UDel (having spent five weeks there -- Main Street is lots of fun :)), and I haven't visited Case or RPI yet but I know that they're solid schools academically (and might not even be safeties w/o legacy but I have a good chance at one or both because of legacy), and I think I'd like them, too. Plus, UDel is REALLY cheap compared to the other schools on my list, even OOS, AND offers a lot of merit aid, so I feel like if I ended up going there I'd be going there for pretty damn cheap, which would be good.

I know that all of my schools are either safeties or reaches, which makes me feel stupid and arrogant when I look at my list, haha. JHU's the closest thing I have to a "match" and obviously I'm not guaranteed admission there. Sigh. But I dunno... it's kinda hard to put into perspective what a "match" would be for someone with high stats and stuff. :/

Oh, and I'm not applying to College Park 'cause everyone from my high school goes there. -___- It's not a pride issue like I think I'm BETTER than everyone else, it's just that I'd like to do something different.

youre in at princeton id bet if you apply early

Thank you! I'd never heard that one before. XD

But there's no early action or decision anymore at Princeton... (I had to look it up to be sure, 'cause I knew a lot of the Ivies got rid of it but I wasn't sure which ones.)

Hi Poseur!

Thanks for chancing me. I appreciate your input, so I'll return the favor by evaluating you. (Note: My school actually does not rank, so I did not list a rank on my stats list ... and my GPA does appear slightly lower because ... of some situation that my couselor will explain in her rec ... she promised!)

Anyways, enough about me. Your UW GPA of 4.0 is excellent, and you've obviously challenged yourself in high school with 12 APs. With such a rigorous courseload, colleges know that you're willing to challenge yourself and that you'll be well prepared for college. The scores that you have for your APs should earn some credit ... but I'm really sorry that CB still has not sent scores out for you ... they really took their dear time this year.

Your SAT score of 2390 is really impressive, especially when you only sat for the SAT one time! That will play very well in the minds of college admissions because it shows that you definitely know your skills really well ... not the test itself. Only about 500 people in the US actually attain a 2390+. Congrats! You're very special. Your ECs are also pretty impressive, though you don't seem to hold any leadership positions, I know that you were pretty active in them with your detailed descriptions of each activity. All that matters in admissions is whether you actually did something for a club, instead of just showing up at a few meetings so that you can list it in your app. Your ECs are also really impressive ... and I hope you enjoyed your time at Summer@Brown ... I know I did!

Yes, having ECs that you enjoy is hugely important, because when you have a passion for something, admission officers can tell by reading your essay. In fact at Summer@Brown, the admission officer told us that what impresses her is what you made out of an experience ... not how many experiences you had. It's better to have a few activities that you enjoy instead of having a laundry list of activities just for show.

Your honors/awards are decent, but they're not the golden part of your app, because none of them are of the national or international level. Regional/state awards do matter as much as the nationals do, but having national awards is not required for admission to top schools (thank God!).

Overall, you're a hugely impressive student ... one of the best I've seen here at CC. I have little doubt that you'll get into at least a few of the colleges you've listed ... with your passion for what you do, you will go far in life.

Chances:
Amherst: Reach (the fact that it has a 14% admission rate tells me that admission is very competitive like it is at Brown)
BU: In + match for full-ride scholarship
Columbia: Reach (it's an Ivy)
Cornell: Safety match (it's an ivy ... but admission isn't that bad)
Dartmouth: Reach (It's another Ivy)
Emory: Safety
NYU: Safety
OH Wesleyan: In
Oberlin: Safety match (not too familiar)
Swarthmore: Slight reach
UChicago: Your stats are way above range, but it all comes down to your essay. If you want me to comment on your essay, feel free to PM it to me.
UPenn: Match
URochester: in
Vanderbilt: Safety match
WUSTL: Match

Good luck, and thanks for chancing me!

oh interesting
idk your stats are on par and that princeton rec might easily be something that sets you apart

Continued chancing here:

Brown: Reach (it's an ivy and too many people go to Summer@Brown)
Case Western Reserve: You're sooooo in!
Johns Hopkins: Match
MIT: Reach (any nat'l or int'l awards in science or math will help tho)
Northwestern: Safety match
Princeton (XD 'cause I won their book award and the alumni were like, "we can write you rec letters " so why not?): Reach (Top Ivy)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (mom attended, so probably a safety?): You're sooo in!
University of Delaware (and their Honors Program): IN + Possible scholarship money
Wellesley: Slight reach (competitive from what I know)

You have a pretty good list so far, but you might want to narrow it down a bit so that you can spend quality time on your apps.

Again, good luck!
-ab2013

Thank you very much! You're really good at this. (:

Actually, the first list of schools that you chanced were just ones that I was considering at one point; I ended up narrowing it down to just the nine (Brown thru Wellesley.) So I'm really sorry that you did so much extra, but that totally would have helped when I was still considering the additional list, haha. (And my mind is still open, so if I end up adding one of those schools to my list, your opinion will be taken into account. :D)

You're the best... I wish you the best of luck in your applications!

People seem to be more willing to chance me at night.

I should really stop bumping this thread but it's so addictive...

Hi Poseur!

Woops ... I was wondering why you had such a laundry list of colleges ... but that's good that you narrowed down your list by that much. From what I've heard, Brown has a really good and popular neuroscience program. You should also apply for the PLME program, because it seems that you definitely have a chance -- but keep in mind that only 50 or so people get admitted, so if you get rejected ... well it won't be the end of the world. I also suggest that you add the University of Michigan to your list, because they have a pretty good neuroscience/medical program ... in fact the CNN anchor *Sanjay Gupta * is a UMich alum who majored in ... NEUROSCIENCE! You just can't get wrong with Michigan ... even if you end up switching majors, everything else at UMich is pretty top notch. Your 4.0 UW GPA + 2390 SAT + your other impressive parts of your app means that you'll have a good chance at a full-ride at UMich ... though it's really difficult to achieve, because a full-ride is only awarded to 15 applicants in an applicant body of almost 30,000.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

I hope that this helps,
-ab2013

I would also suggest looking at Wesleyan (in CT). they have a good neuro program, similar to Amherst, but with more research going on
