Is my SAT score good or would it better to apply test optional?

I scored a 1110 on the SAT for the first time, would this be a good score for most colleges if everything else i my application is strong? Or does applying test optional make a difference?

It really depends on what schools you’re considering. Your score sits at about average, so unless he school requires it, I wouldn’t submit.

I suggest more prep and try again if you are really determined, and maybe consider the ACT.

If I take the SAT again, does it erase my previous score, or can I choose which one to keep? Or can I combine?

Your score isn’t erased, but you can submit higher scores and not the lower ones, and if the school allows it, you can super score by taking higher scores from each test section.

It would be helpful to know the schools you’re thinking of applying to.

In general, unless required, there are few schools where 1100 is going to benefit your application. Generally, you want your test score to be above the 50th percentile of accepted students. You can Google “name of college average SAT score” and will get a good idea of where your score sits.

Where are you planning to apply to college?

I think that @thumper1 and others have asked the right question: Where do you intend to apply to university?

I quickly looked up the average SAT scores for a few universities in my neck of the woods using PrepScholar. As a few examples, U.Maine has an average SAT score of 1154, an average incoming GPA of 3.29, and a 92% admissions rate. UNH has an average SAT of 1183, average GPA of 3.5, and a 77% acceptance rate. U.Mass Dartmouth has SAT 1093, GPA 3.25, and a 77% admissions rate.

Your 1110 SAT score would not prevent you from getting admitted to these universities or similar schools, and they are good schools. However, your SAT would not help either. I would only submit your score if the school requires SAT scores.

Of course you can retake, but you should do more preparation first if you do this. You could also try the ACT.

One thing that I did not see in your post: What grade of high school were you in when you took the SAT, and how much preparation did you do?

If your score is > 75th percentile for that school, then submit. Otherwise if they are test optional, then don’t submit.
