Is my score a 'weak' 2250?

I have a 2250 SAT, but my writing score is 790. Is my 2250 therefore not as competitive as other 2250 scores that have 1500+ math/cr?

Wow. really? Do you just get on these boards to gloat? You could apply to any college in the WORLD with that score (assuming you have grades, ec, recs)

Please relax. I am not trying to gloat; many people on these forums have scores much higher than mine. I’m asking because some colleges only look at reading and math(Cornell) and I am curious as to whether the colleges that look at all 3 sections weigh them equally or consider Math-Reading more important.

Yes, it’s the individual sections that matter more than the combined scores. Your CR is likely not in the “super impressive / can’t possibly hurt you” range.

I guess technically that would give you a ‘weak’ 2250 but that doesn’t mean you should worry about it- a 2250 is a great score no matter what and I can’t see it hurting you at all in admissions :)

A 2250 is excellent, and 1460 Cr/M is great, but definitely not as competitive as a 1500+ CR/M. Only a few top 20 schools like Cornell look at CR/M Only though. They may glance at writing though, unofficially.

Some colleges just need two parts of scores. U of Chicago only asks for two: M&Cr. In that case, your 1460 is just average.

Georgetown completely disregards W.

I hope that was sarcasm. If not, it illustrates the hazards of relying on answers on forums such as this!

In fact, a 1460 CR+M puts you in the 98th percentile of all SAT test-takers.
To answer your question, your scores are excellent. You can look at a college’s Common Data Set to determine whether that specific college considers SAT Writing scores or not. Yes, perhaps it would be slightly better to have a 1500+ CR and Math score, but in your range, most college admissions officers would say that they look at the whole picture and that a slight increase just wouldn’t matter.

Cool, but at ivy league schools for example, the 50th percentile for SAT scores is around 2250, so a 2260 is a little bit above the average score for Ivy league schools. You can bet other top 20 schools have similar score ranges.

What you don’t get is that top colleges don’t evaluate your SAT scores based on the entire country; they evaluate your SAT scores based on those of other applicants. For example, you may consider a 650 CR to be excellent, because it puts you at the 90th percentile in the nation, but it wouldn’t be so excellent at Cornell, where it is about the 25th percentile.

we are really similar in that i have a 2260 with an 800 writing score… i’d say we may have a “weak” 1600 score, but certainly not a “weak” 2400 score. my friend’s dad is on the admissions board for a school that supposedly doesn’t take the writing score, but he admits that they notice when applicants do exceptionally well or poorly on it. they aren’t technically using that information in their decision, but they may take it into account if there are discrepancies or something of the like.
