Hello all. So today, I did my SFS essay, but I’m wondering if it may be too inappropriate or controversial. I wrote about the Syrian civil war from a realist, US-centric perspective. It mostly said that the US should try and contain the war. I said a lot of more specific things, but basically the idea was for the US to take a distant approach and focus on preventing Lebanese and Palestinian conflicts from escalating, as well as taking a less sectarian approach to helping states in the Middle East.
I really want to show the SFS that I have extracurricular knowledge of history, since I don’t really have many activities related to history. I was wondering if this essay may be too controversial or detached from my personal experiences, since it is just my analysis of the situation. Can any alumni or people involved with Georgetown shed some insight?
Also, it is ok to say things like “i believe”, or “in my opinion”?
I think that’s a good topic to do. It’s relevant to current events, which is good, and I don’t think it’s too controversial. It’s good that you have your own opinion in there, too. I personally structured mine based off of a research paper I did on the South China Sea. I had no personal connections to it except for the fact that I was born in Hong Kong. Honestly, there’s no wrong answer on how to write your essay. They want to see how you think, so don’t worry too much about the topic. Worry more about the content and the essay itself.
