Is a 3.8 too low for an unweighted GPA? I am a sophomore and I just completed my first semester. I am in all honors or AP classes and I moved up to honors for the first time in two classes this year.

The students in the top 10% in my school (strictly based on grades) would probably have between 3.9 and 4.0. Also, my school does not rank because pretty much everyone has the same grades (mostly A’s).

I want to know if this is too low for Columbia University.

It depends. Where are you applying?

For state schools, you may still have a shot. You’re completely out of the game for Ivy Leagues and UCB/UCLA (sorry to break it to you).

Is there really nothing I can do to get into Columbia?

@somenights, 3.8 is definitely NOT too low. That’s a mostly A student, which is right on par with the tougher colleges. Plus, Columbia looks at more than just the GPA for applicants: [What Does Columbia Look For? | Columbia Undergraduate Admissions](Understanding the Process | Columbia Undergraduate Admissions)

Furthermore, an unweighted GPA # doesn’t say much without a comparison of your schedule’s rigor (see transcript) to other students. And they’re also going to count SAT scores, extracurriculars, essays, qualities, recommendations, etc. There’s no way Columbia’s going to throw away your application just based on a single number.

Thank you so much! :)
