Is New Haven safe for summer students?

I am 15 and I want to attend the Explo Summer programme at Yale this summer, but my parents are worried because they have heard stories of New Haven not being a very safe college town. When attending Explo, we are only allowed into certain designated areas of NH and not very far from the campus boundaries. Is safety around the campus really an issue? thanks :)

a friend did explo once and he said it was just fine and he never felt unsafe… I’m sure you’ll be fine

Hi!
I was at Yale last summer for another camp, but I saw many people who were attending Explo. The campus isn’t too dangerous; my instructors said that Yale is okay, except for New Haven Green, whatever that is. There are some odd people though: I saw a Native American shouting something tribal on the streets :0 but just use common sense and you’ll be fine :D

I think New Haven Green is safe during day time – unless you try to compare it to a gated suburban neighborhood instead of the downtown area of a city.

New Haven Green is really not a large area. It is adjacent to the main entrance to Old Campus on one side and there are bus stops and several churches on other side. The streets surrounding the New Haven Green are busy streets.

At one time, I read an article in which the author wrote that New Haven downtown/Green attracted more homeless people from other cities just because it is relatively safer. He wrote that those homeless care about their own safety too and believe or not, they are more sensitive to whether an area is safe or not than most people.

Explo students appear to be fairly comprehensively chaperoned whenever they go anywhere off-campus. Even on-campus they always seem to move about in groups.

I was at Yale all this summer (as a 17-year-old girl) and I felt completely safe. Definitely keep to the campus if you’re nervous, and only walk around outside of the campus with someone else. I would take the bus system if you’re going anywhere far away.

The New Haven Green really isn’t dangerous, it’s a very beautiful place bordered by the campus.

New Haven is lovely now - when I was at Yale 25 years ago I stayed over during several summers and found it a bit dicey in places (but never had any trouble.) now it’s fantastic.

New Haven is nowhere as dangerous as some peoples’ perception. As long as you have common sense, and do not adventure into certain parts of the city after dark, you should be fine.

Enjoy the experience.

Hey -

I hear good things about explo. I live in New Haven, about 2 miles from Yale. The campus itself is very safe, and explo people are usually pretty restricted about where they’re allowed to go anyways. Most of the crime in New Haven is well away from the downtown/yale area, so your parents really don’t need to worry about that. The Yale campus is very safe.

New Haven Green is a nice place, too. It’s a city park - if you are going to explo, then you’ll never step foot in it anyways.

I did Explo last year, and I must say that New Haven is way more ghetto (sorry for lack of better word) than what is shown on the brochure and what people on College Confidential say. There is a reason why New Haven is ranked the fourth most dangerous city in the US (See: [New Haven fourth most dangerous city in U.S., according to preliminary FBI data | Cross Campus](New Haven fourth most dangerous city in U.S., according to preliminary FBI data - Yale Daily News)).

A lot of my fellow Explo friends and I felt extremely unsafe at times. There are some weird/shady people in New Haven.

When I visited other schools, I did not have this problem. Especially with Princeton (think Hogwarts/castles and manicured gardens in a safe suburb), which is why I applied there.

Explo also wasn’t that amazing. Sure I had fun, but it wasn’t an eye-opening experience; it seemed very contrived in trying to create a “Yale” experience. My two cents.

I have no affiliation with the university, butI’ve lived in New Haven, within walking distance of Yale, for almost 25 years. Raised three kids here, who have taken various Yale programs, and attended various events. The only crime we have experienced is when I stupidly left my car unlocked and my (malfunctioning) GPS was pinched. Before that, I lived in a bucolic New England college town, and my apartment was twice burlglarized.

As others have said, exercise common sense–as you should anywhere–and you’ll be fine.

My kids’ suburban friends wish they were in New Haven too. Much cooler to be able to walk to Starbucks, the Green, or Toads, than to be miles from nowhere.

My anecdotal experiences aside, that 4th most dangerous city business is a canard. Here’s citeable reality: “New Haven is ranked at 168 on the danger scale, similar to Salt Lake City, Boston, Honolulu, and Eugene, Oregon.”

It’s from Data Haven.

I found it in the comments thread of a Yale Daily News op-ed by a freshman about the so-called scariness of New Haven.

it is not very safe for the DRIVER. I think I dare not drive when there is such a large crowd there. I think I saw Phelps Gate, which is right next to the New Haven Green.
