Is NHS actually a big thing at your school?

We need a 3.7 UW GPA to be invited to apply and then like 100 out of about 300 get in. People take it pretty seriously at my school but it does actually raise a lot of money and put on a lot of events so in that way it’s a good thing I guess.

My school doesn’t have it

My school didn’t take it seriously. I was the Vice-President and my GPA was RIDICULOUSLY below par. Pfft, joke.

It’s like a college app. basically with a 3.8 WGPA minimum here.

It’s nothing special at my school. You need a 90 average and have 40 hours of community service by the end of the year. They hold events like small bake sales and fund raisers, but no one ever talks about them or even knows about them unless you’re in it or have a class with someone in it.

I guess it’s pretty important but it really seems like just an EC to pack on to your app to make you look better…

In my class of 180, there are somewhere around 70 in NHS. It’s a combo of being easy to get in and having a really smart class.

My school raised the bar to 3.8+ recently – I don’t really think it’s a big deal in my school at least

It’s not that big of a deal in my school, but it’s pretty exclusive to get in. Like many qualified applicants get rejected every year. To be selected to even apply, you need to make the honor roll the first two marking periods (the apps are sent out during the beginning of the third marking period). On the app, you have to put down all your achievements, community service, athletic achievements, etc, etc. I didn’t even qualify this year since I didn’t make honor roll the first two marking periods (pathetic I know, I struggled for the first half of the year which killed my GPA). In 10th grade, I got the application, but was rejected unfortunately. This year is kind of a waste since I should have already applied to all my schools before the applications even come out. It will help if I am waitlisted at a college though.

We need 3.5gpa with at least 3 activities a year and leadership. I didn’t get in because I didn’t have enough character-y activities/leadership. Many other app-padding, homework and test cheating classmates did get in. Ah well.

My school also doesn’t have it.

You need a 3.5 UW GPA at my school to be able to join…but it’s basically pointless.

FROM THE NHS WEBSITE: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by the local school’s Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

Based on that official description, the OP’s school should not be allowing NHS admission with a 2.0 GPA. That is against the standards of admission set up by NHS.

That being said, my D’s school requires a 3.75 GPA and several teacher recs. Once that is achieved, the group does NOTHING else.

I don’t even think my school has it. We have Cum Laude. The more Latin it is, the more we love it.

^^ My school is shady. Ha.

our nhs does some things

We have like 22 members, you need a 90% and for teachers to rate you highly, then like 25 volunteer hours and good ECs. People act like it’s a big thing, but I really don’t think it’s too huge.

It’s semi-important, as only seniors and folks with 85+ (I think) are eligible for consideration. However, in the end, only a few students are picked. My school as a whole lacks certain courses and really isn’t that great in helping students (the non-lazy minority) get into the more prestigious universities–mostly because it doesn’t do enough to inform the students about tests other than the SAT I and whatnot. The NHS at my school does mostly tutoring, in fact.

people freak out about it here. you need a 92 average, 50 leadership hours, 50 regular hours… basically it just turns everyone into even bigger volunteer-hour-whores. i do community service but i refuse to anally tally each and every hour, so no NHS for me haha. and its not even a big deal, they don’t do a whole lot

Here, you need a 93 average cumulative weighted. as for community service, apparently you do have to list extracurriculars and stuff but its kind of considered a joke. Some of the brightest students even encourage other people not to join it because its so stupid. After one gets in to NHS, you periodically have to do like one or two volunter events a year or something like that. I don’t even think one becomes elligible until the 2nd semester of junior year. People worry if they’ll get in despite the fact that they have a detention- I don’t even think the council cares.
The best thing is that if you have a 93 average and don’t join- the principal like, hunts you down to find out why…
Love my school- it keeps me laughing.
