NHS (National Honors Society) Problems

Everyone knows about NHS. It's a big deal right? Well, let me explain the problem I have with them.

ANYTHING you do in 7th and 8th Grade does not count towards it.
ANYTHING you do in 12th Grade does not count towards it.

A VERY dear friend of mine is a model along with her mother. She won Miss Teen New Jersey. She put that on her application and was accepted due purely because of that. She is a bright lass and I feel great for her.

I, on the other hand, have won over $22,000 in Professional Gaming in the USA, have been to World Cyber Games for 4 years straight, and appeared on TV once. That sounds pretty good right? I even had the past 2 Super Intendants of my High School write letters of recommendation as well as the current principal.

I get a letter from NHS stating, "You do not meet our criteria for extra-curricular activity points." My friend was accepted into NHS who attended a "Church Picnic." That alone was enough to get him into NHS. I'm all for religion, don't get me wrong, but... come on.

Do I have a right to feel VERY angry about this, or will Colleges not care about it? My friend says that if I gave away that $22,000 to charity, then I would be let in. Sorry, but I need that $22,000 for College :D. Discuss.

you have awesome accomplishments. Don't let some random NHS try to bring you down. It's not worth it. I don't think NHS is really that big of a deal. I think it's just a fancy name. All you pretty much do is community service...which you don't really need for college.

NHS means nothing. It's like not being in Habitat for Humanity. It's an activity, in the end, that helps students find volunteer opportunities. Not the end of the world. I know how you feel though--I was rejected too (shadier reasons but I'm mostly over that now).

Of coarse you have the right to feel angry. Btw, which games do you play at the cyber league, Counterstrike, halo, quake?

I play StarCraft: Brood War and am in a professional Gears of War team known as "Prophecy" over at MLGPro.com

One college I applied to rejected me since I wasn't in it. It wasn't a GREAT College, but I would like to have a backup.

SC:BW...are you Korean by any chance? jk haha.

Gears of War is hell online ><

Every round is so short and the only way I can kill someone is with a) luck b) long range c) random shotgun to face d) more luck.

Bitter.

Nice, Munix. You should switch over to Halo, or Counterstrike.

:)

I'm friends with Team 3D, #4 CS team or something in world, and I know Strongside really well through MLG. I can hold my own in those games.

Nah, but I know Korean by heart since I was forced to learn it in order to become one of the best.

How do you know the college rejected you because you weren't in NHS?

I face all challengers in Counterstrike. Sure, I suck. But I'll still face you as long as you don't awp me to death (7 years and I still can't dodge those bullets, especially when you do that totally annoying wheel-crouch trick. Bah!)

Counterstrike is way too addictive, consumes my life. Seriously.
I remember the awping days with no scope, M4 sprays, ak ridiculous HS, hilarious frags, gotta love flashin your teammates, and tking all your friends online, CPL ,the list goes on....

Do you think that colleges really care that you won $22K for playing in video game tournaments?

Don't get me wrong, I love video games, but I understand why you're angry at NHS. Just forget about it, it's not the end of the world.

Man I wish Gaming ECs counted in the college admissions process =[ It's really my passion.

I've won over 5k and a new computer online playing some FPS and RTS.

And who cares about NHS, its a blowoff club anyway.

NHS is a joke, don't even worry.

Eh, this is exactly the reason why I didn't join NHS. The stupid unnecessary guidelines and requirements in addition to the membership fee and infrequency/inconsistency/worthlessness of meetings is why I'm staying away from it. From what I have seen, it is a complete waste of time at my school and the only pluses are that they get some exclusive opportunities to volunteer hours, they sponsor the Top 10% Banquet, and a silly cord at graduation. Basically an overvalued service club. Every time I tell someone that I'm not in it, they're completely shocked, as if I have missed out on THE shoo-in to whatever school/scholarship I want. Whatever.

Glad a lot of you feel the same.

Uncle of mine who graduated from Yale said that NHS gets kids to do community work Prisoners do. Quite a bold statement if you ask me.

Well let that be your introduction to the logic of college admissions. NHS selection can seem very random and completely lacking any reason, but there is always some sort of reason behind the selection. I really don't know what to tell you. It really isn't that important. I was in it during high school but I don't think I would have been any worse off without it. In college, honor societies usually set concrete criteria for admission. So it makes a little more sense and carries a whole lot more prestige. So don't let it get you down.

Hey i have some NHS questions, i have a 3.67 cumilitive wgpa i am a rising junior
my extra curricular activites is Martial arts club, key club, ib club, badminton. Do you think i have a chance at joining nhs? and what is so good about nhs and hwo does it help u into college message me or ill check on here

it's another club that has a couple requirements to get in, that's all. the requirements vary by school. it doesn't really help you get into college although it can be a good activity on your resume if you put effort into it and come out with a lot of volunteer experience.

Are you serious? I love the World Cyber Games competitions... Forget NHS, you're my hero.
