I was just accepted a transfer student at tandon. That is what I’ll need to take out to attend. Worth it? Not worth it? I’m electrical engineering but plan on going to medical school.
You cannot borrow that, your parents would have to borrow most of it. That amount of debt is ridiculous just to have the NYU name.
I don’t qualify for p-plus loan, actually. I’m an independent student , but I suspect I’d need a consignor for such a large amount (22k would need to be sourced from a private lender). I’m really disappointed at the low FA offer after having applied to NYU only because their net price calculator estimated my aid package as 50k
There will always be things you can’t afford.
For you, for my kids, for most of my students, NYU is simply one of those things… right up there with the Porsche. It’s simply a fact of life.
Sorry, if you were my child you wouldn’t have applied to a school you had no shot at being able to attend… not to even mention all the money that medical school will cost. You should be looking at the cheapest undergrad price tag you can possibly find.
NYU is known for not being as generous as many expect. I’m glad you realiz this difficulty and asked here.
If med school is in your future, save your money for that. It can be outrageously expensive.
Where are you now? As you are non trad, ones assumes you are working your way through, what is wrong with finishing in that way? Engineering is engineering. Med school is going to crucify you financially and as you are older, keep you poorer for longer. You should be looking to finish your undergrad for as close to free as possible. Are you chasing something in particular at NYU?
I’m at UNLV, a relatively unknown state school in nevada. I can’t really justify the price tag for NYU, myself, but I want to work in a research position so I know the name of a university does matter somewhat, too. Guess I was kind of hoping someone would make a pro-NYU argument. :d
I thought Tandon was the engineering school, @lookingforward ?
Pro NYU yes, pro $140,000 debt no way.
35k/yr is just too much to justify, no matter how great the opportunities NYU can provide.
JenJen, OPwants to study engineering for now.
" I want to work in a research position so I know the name of a university does matter somewhat, too."
If you mean post-med school, then it’s the med school work that matters, and/or a program that bridges medical studies and a higher level of research. In any case, the work you do as an undergrad and summers can give you that leg up. You don’t need to move to college more of the general public knows.
Certainly, before borrowing now, figure out the professional school opportunities.
UNLV for an engineer is well know enough. $35k per year is really going to limit your choices after graduation.
Did you discuss with NYU why the NPC said you’d get $50k in aid and you got so much less than that? Not all NPCs work for transfer students, but I’d still question them about it.
I called FA to ask and they said a bulk of the FA aid in the calculator is for parent plus loan, which isnt applicable for me since in independent
I agree with @TomSrOfBoston and others, this is too much debt.
I don’t see any harm in asking NYU why their offer didn’t match the NPC, but I wouldn’t expect anything to change. I think that you can do well where you are.
Don’t do it. Get great grades at UNLV and prep well for the MCAT, and you will be fine.
Even though it hurts, I won’t be accepting their offer.
I’m sorry you’re disappointed, but I think that’s a great decision for you. In 10 years, your older self will probably be very happy with your current self. Enjoy where you are without having to worry about enormous debt.
Nope…not by a long shot. Medical school generally requires a lot of private loans in order to finish. Those loans are subject to credit approval. If you have that much undergraduate debt, you could get turned down for loans. If you want to go to medical school, it’s better to save the debt so you can finish a medical degree.
