I’m interested in applying to NYU and I was curious if it’s regarded as a good school to go to. Not in a pretentious way, but do you feel respected for going there (If you have)? I’ve heard mixed comments ranging from NYU being easy to it being regarded as one of the better schools in the nation… Feedback and everyone’s experience would be much appreciated.
It is in the top 100 schools in the country on every list I have ever looked at, and top 50 in many. That’s pretty good. I would say that it is pretty prestigious.
Along the same lines; without this coming off pretentious, if I was to tell someone I went to NYU would they be impressed? Is it held in that regard?
Yes, I believe so. Being an NYU student arguably gives you some of the best connections of any school you could go to. Name dropping is especially handy if you’re applying to one of the most coveted programs at NYU, like Stern or Tisch, but I think that no matter what program you apply to, saying you went to NYU will only help you.
The really prestigious one is on the Upper West Side in Morningside Heights. It offers great financial aid too!
maybe like…i dont know…go to a school you actually like or something…? because what will DEFINITELY matter in the long run is the prestigiousness of your undergrad.
While NYU is a very fine school, and noted for the arts, research, and many other departments, it’s worth noting some of the drawbacks. It’s fair to note these on CC as it’s almost a cliche on this forum that someone writes in saying “Is $200K debt worth it for NYU?” And when they hear “no” They answer: “But it’s NYU!”
The downsides are –
- poor financial aid + expensive
- a huge school with many departments and no center–some may like how it’s salted throughout lower Manhattan. Others find it alienating and lacking in community.
- some liken it to a major and well-regarded state school, but with private school prices.
Alternate schools in the City include: Columbia, Barnard, the CUNY system of fine schools, Wagner on Staten Island, St. John’s in Queens, The New School, St. Josephs, Fordham, and several others nearby: Manhattan, Manhattanville, Purchase, Sarah Lawrence, Vassar, Marist.
@ Dustyfeathers People who liken it to a state university are just ill informed. As for the price, it really depends on individual circumstances. D was accepted at both Barnard and NYU and chose NYU partly because they offered her a merit scholarship in music of $11K/ year whereas Barnard would have been full pay because we don’t qualify for financial aid.
So yes, if you have need and Columbia meets it, often Columbia is a better option in terms of $. But D mostly applied to schools that give merit aid–and did not apply to ivies–because of the cost. Without financial aid, Columbia’s and NYU’s costs are very similar.
Also depending upon majors, NYU can be very personal and tight knit. Younger D was an art major there–and art classes are in a separate building that has a very strong community.
There were roughly 40 students that graduated with her in her major and they were all very close as a group of students and with their professors.
If you are rich NYU is great, otherwise you will likely graduate with an exorbitant amount of student loans that will burden you for decades.
