is OOS admission more difficult for those needing FA?

I know that Michigan is a state school. Do they make admission decisions on OOS applicants based on need requirements. Are they need blind. Are they only looking to admit full pay OOS Students. Will they be less apt to admit when aid is needed. I would understand, but be disappointed. Any perspectives?

They’re need-blind.

Since when?

@wayneandgarth

It is my understanding that it is need-blind for everyone (except probably internationals), and guarantees to meet full-need of in-state students.

^ I believe that is correct for in state but not out of state yet. That is where the most recent fund raising is intended to help. But they are not to that point yet.

So a more than qualified student with need from OOS, might get denied over a full pay? I was afraid of that…But there seems to be lacking full consensus here…i may have to call admissions, and see if they will give an honest answer

@wayneandgarth It is need blind and they always meet needs for in-state students. For OOS students, they are providing more generous aids now particularly for lower income families (even for middle class).

They will suggest your child apply. Strong OOS applicants get in.

That was my understanding @billcsho. Maybe technically need blind but not meeting the full need yet of OOS. Getting better with the improved fund raising.

Thanks all for your clarification. Hoping for the long shot of Ross Freshman admit, and some aid…Will try, and hope for the best, but not expect anything…

Need blind = Need is not considered in admission decisions.

Meet full need = well, meets full financial need. Michigan meets full need for in-state students.

So, you can be accepted, with your need having no impact on the admissions decisions—BUT, you may not get your full need met. So you should look into outside scholarships.

need blind and generous for ALL applicants. I received a 20k per year grant and am OOS

@guitar321

Let’s not generalize, they are not generous necessarily for ALL applicants. There are many OOS in the upper middle class income range who are not having their financial need met. Also, let’s not forget all those international students who are not given any aid at all.

Agreed @yikesyikesyikes

While they may be need blind I do know that they can see whether or not you applied for FA at all. It says if you did on the common app view that they are sent. Or at least it did when I applied.

^^But that’s meaningless. You need to fill out FAFSA if you want to take out the Stafford loan.
